What inspires me about Scotland

Stephen, Head of Learning & Programmes
National Museums Scotland

"This was the most memorable meal I've ever had, coming after a 10 hour walk with a group of mates up the stunning 'Beinn Àilleagan' in Torridon on the hottest day of the year. Coming off the mountain we sped to a seaside pub in Sheildaig where the much needed carbohydrates were washed down with ice cold lager."

"Scotland has so much to offer in terms of great fresh local food - seafood, meat, fruit, veg...and cheese! We should support local farmers, patronise restaurants that use Scottish produce and make the most of what is around us. I especially love smooshing up fresh raspberries to have in my morning porridge! ."

"Bennachie‘s range of hills evokes a real sentimental attachment for me. I have climbed up to the top of the Mither tap peak on bright sunny days and snowy winter ones from a very young age. I always look out for the familiar friend when around the Donside area of Aberdeenshire."

"As a keen photographer, all the beautiful landscapes in Scotland, both in the countryside and within the city, offer endless inspirational opportunities. I walk past the Meadows against the backdrop of Arthur’s Seat every day on my way to work, and have photographed it in all kinds of weather and seasons.”

"Tartan has been present in my wardrobe since I was very young. As a Highland Dancer, I adorned my kilt on a regular basis heading out to competitions, where the varying colours of tartans you can see are amazing. I like new, brightly coloured tartans just as much as the old traditional tartans, and love to see people wearing tartan with pride, whether they are Scottish or from elsewhere. When I got married, we bought my English husband a kilt in the Ancient Ferguson tartan, so that he can wear my family tartan, while I took his name. There is nothing I like more than seeing a crowd of people wearing kilts (particularly when the skirl of the bagpipes can be heard!)"

Stones of Stenness, Orkney by ElaineM NMS

Elaine, Digital Media Content Manager
National Museums Scotland

''Scotland is mysterious and pagan and raw and beautiful and weatherbeaten and cold and old – and so are the Stones of Stenness in Orkney. The day we went there, it was pouring with rain and the wind was so fierce it nearly blew the car door off, but the sun came out to take this picture. It was an awesome and inspiring visit, so I’m submitting this picture as an example of what inspires me about Scotland. '

The Cobbler

The mountains of Scotland will inspire anyone with a heart and soul. The Cobbler is one of the most famous mountains and has thousands of visitors each year - and it's not difficult to see why.
If I can climb it so can you... probably. Give it a go, you won't regret it.

Iona Abbey

"I have spent two summers and four winters working on the Isle of Iona in the Inner Hebrides, and I find everything about it inspiring - the dramatic skies and gorgeous sunsets, its history and spirituality, swimming in the sea in summer and walking bent against the gale force winds in winter, the people I have met working there from all over the world... It truly is a very special place."

Portobello beach at sunset

Since moving back to Scotland in July 09, Portobello beach has become a special place. Come rain or shine it's always a pleasure to take a walk along and the combination of amusements, fish and chips, bustling pubs and a very cool cafe give it both a retro and contemporary feel.

This photo from the end of the summer captures a perfect evening for a dog walk.

National Museums of Scotland

This is the new wing of the museum on Chamber street, that I came to as a child to see the exhibits, the fish and to watch films. I met Moira Shearer here, a hero of mine at the time (The Red Shoes ballerina). I was inspired by my parents' friend, Ian Bunyan (who worked at the museum until he died in the 90's) who showed my brother and I films that he made from his travels before tourism was invited. I remember seeing films of Komodo dragons in Indonesia. I learnt to take and develop calotype photographs at a workshop run from the basement and used an ancient camera from the collection, and exposed my prints on the front steps. I used the museum for inspiration throughout my college years and was so proud when they bought my hatpin that received a special commendation in the Platinum awards. They later bought my first hat made in 1989 and even later I donated my first shoes in memory of Ian Bunyan. And now as a mother, it is the place that I take my kids when I come home. So when I saw this opportunity to show what inspires me about Scotland, the museum is my choice.

Thank you for this opportunity to express my ties with this place. I love the exhibition, by the way.

"This train journey always lifts the spirits - the last lap before Edinburgh – north of Berwick a glimpse of the grey north sea parallel to the train, then turning inland across rolling countryside through East Lothian – Ayton castle, the breakers and beach at Dunbar, the white Bass Rock, tankers in the Firth of Forth and then Arthur’s Seat - landmarks all the way - love it! Para Gliding over the Pentlands

We took the ski-lift up the Pentlands with the kids, walked a short while and sat on the hills eating our chocolate rations. A lovely clear November day, took in the familiar but never tiresome Edinburgh vista, and were lucky enough to see these paragliders. Tooks a few pictures, which now make an excellent screen-saver and inspires me to get out on the hills even more.

Rackwick Bay, Hoy, Orkney.

RACKWICK

Let no tongue idly whisper here
Between those strong red cliffs,
Under that great mild sky
Lies Orkney's last enchantment,
The hidden valley of light
Sweetness from the clouds pouring
Songs from the surging sea
Fenceless fields,
Fishermen with ploughs and old heroes
Endlessly sleeping
in Rackwick's compassionate hills.

The perfect moment

The great breadth and depth of Scottish History, Culture, Architecture and Geology. A people of warmth and humour. The changeable weather; the scudding of clouds quickly over the blue skies. (If the sky is not blue it will be soon...maybe tomorrow.) Wide open fields a stone's throw from the cities; of stunning and dramatic scenery. The ability to find peace and sweet fresh air...and that perfect moment.
