About Spring Mountains National Recreation Area Photos from Spring Mountains National Recreation Area in Nevada. This area lies within Toiyabe National Forest and is also commonly referred to as the Charleston Mountains. The mountain range is dominated by 11,910-foot-high Mount Charleston or Mt Charleston. Arising out of the Mojave Desert 40 miles northwest of Las Vegas, the Spring Mountains offer a cooler, higher elevation climate than the surrounding desert.
