About SMILE II - Aay Preston-Myint for SFCamerawork
SFCamerawork visitors to the exhibition Suggestions of a Life Being Lived are invited to step into Aay Preston-Myint's participatory photo-studio installation SMILE II and have their portrait taken with various handmade props and masks, in front of vibrant hand-printed backdrops the artist has also produced.
Informed by the portraiture of Malian photographer Malick Sidibé, the dystopian iconography of David Wojnarowicz and the color-palette of Preston-Myint’s favorite childhood comics featuring mutant-heroes, SMILE II invites participant play and performance within a decidedly queer landscape. Resultant photographs reveal fluid, unnameable identities temporarily intermingling and transposed, resembling no readily categorized family-structure.
Presented here is an archive of portraits taken by the artist, Carmen Winant and Sofia Cordova. Gallery-visitors who have taken portraits themselves using digital-cameras are invited to contribute their own portraits to this photo-pool.
Suggestions of a Life Being Lived is on view at SFCamerawork from September 9, 2010 - October 23, 2010.
