Fallen Friend on Empire Bluffs
|
Cedarkayak reports here:
www.flickr.com/photos/cedarkayak/2758007689
on the falling of "Ferg's Tree" at Empire bluffs.
These are likely the last two photos of it in place:
www.flickr.com/photos/cedarkayak/2752386564
and
www.flickr.com/photos/cedarkayak/2758026551
I've always wondered how long it had been there, and found it remarkable how well it withstood weather and time, and likely climbers, too.
*** Thank you oh great tree for offering your protection of the bluffs, you were great symbol for the area, and will be greatly missed. Long may your memory live on. ***
From a friend who knows this tree well, "As she lies majestically in the sand, she will help hold the dune and continue to bring us joy in her new resting place."
Maybe you'll want to share some stories, memories, photos, etc. about this iconic friend of ours...

@jimflix - As noted elsewhere, I posted two of my favorite photos of the fallen tree on my photostream. It was always a highlight of my hike on the Empire Bluffs trail, and my kids were disappointed to know that they won't see that tree again on their next visit.

I wonder if the tree was a ghost tree that grew years ago, and was covered by the dune, or did it grow more recently when the dune was in it's current location.

Good question -- it has all the earmarks of a ghost tree -- so it could be very old.

Wow, first there was the "Man in the Mountain" in New Hampshire whose face fell off a few years ago, now this! & And of course, the Arches in Utah)
A sad but timely reminder to enjoy what we have and not take things for granted, be they people or places.
Thanks Todd for being there for it's untimely demise and capturing the sad event for posterity. I'm glad we didn't take it's beauty and significance for granted.
(There was the MOST AWESOME photo last week in the Leelanau Enterprise by Ken Scott that was a combination of 160 photos that had the stars blurred around in circles that centered on the former tip of this tree. How fortuitous and perhaps a forecast??? Hope I've still got that issue.)

PixelPerfect Photography [deleted] says:
This is a shock as I was on Empire Bluff the day (August 12th, at 12:33 PM) the supposed event took place and it was standing tall and proud.
I see it fell in the afternoon sometime that very day!! How weird to know it's no longer there!!

TrekGuy,
Thanks, I was going to ask when you took these photos:

www.flickr.com/photos/trekguy/2774861726
CedarKayak's photos of the fallen tree were are 7:35 PM that night, 8/12.
Unless more show up, you have the last photos of this tree standing. Hope that does not feel "spooky!"

Just learned from comments made at this photo
www.flickr.com/photos/cedarkayak/2758007689/
and this site:
www.leelanau.com/blog/fallen-friend-on-empire-bluffs/
that the tree was pushed over by 3 very inconsiderate souls. Very sad indeed.
According to photographers and their photos on Flickr, this occurred between 12:33 PM and 7:35 PM, 8/12/08.

It was needless, kind of shakes your faith in humanity.

I spoke with one of the NPS Park Rangers over the weekend. They believe the tree to be a ghost forest tree which would make it hundreds or even thousands of years old based on carbon dating of soil around similar trees.
