This is a group for jpg photos that have been processed with an HDR software (e.g Photomatix, Dynamic Photo HDR, e.t.c.).

High Dynamic Range imaging (HDR) is a set of techniques that allows a greater dynamic range of exposures (the range of values between light and dark areas) than normal digital imaging techniques. The intention of HDR is to accurately represent the wide range of intensity levels found in real scenes ranging from direct sunlight to shadows.

The common method of creating HDR images is by taking two or more photos of the exact same view but with different exposure values and combining them with a software such as Photomatix.

A lot of people say that you can't make an HDR from a single Jpeg, or that the image produced by tonemapping a single jpeg is not an HDR because jpeg files do not contain enough information to produce a high dynamic range photo.
Although HDR images produced from a single jpg exposure may not have as high dynamic range as the images produced from a RAW file or from multiple exposures, still the images produced have a higher range than with the regular photos.
Try it and you will be amazed with the amount of information that is availlable in a single jpeg photo, and/or the capabilities of today's software to extract information from a single jpeg.

This is a way of creating an HDR from some old photos that turned out good but you hadn't taken multiple exposures at that time, or an easy way of creating HDRs with movement (people and cars) without worrying about the ghost artifacts (a problem that occurs when creating an HDR from multiple exposures) or even a way of fixing overexposed and underexposed photos. Of course these advantages are the same for HDR from a RAW file but a lot of cameras don't have RAW capabilities.

The current version of Photomatix does not let you create an HDR from a single jpg photo (it asks for two or more bracketed images or a RAW format photo) but there are ways overpass that limitation (see the discussions for more info).
