[Closed] WINNERS ANNOUNCED! July Photo Contest - BLACK & WHITE FLOWERS

view profile

karenphillips says:

What a great bunch of contest entries we had this month. I hope everyone had as much fun taking their photos as I had looking at them!

First place goes to #23 - Nite Scape's up close and personal view of an Agapanthus.

Second Place goes to #34 - danbmich's elegantly simple study of daisies.

Third place is a tie between #1 - samantha.jones68's lovely leaf study: Lupine with Water Droplets and #36 - purlingplan's wonderful celebration of sunlight and sunflowers.

Congratulations everyone on your beautiful and creative efforts!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This month's contest theme is BLACK & WHITE FLOWERS. Black & white flower photos might sound counter-intuitive, but they’re a lot of fun. Using black and white makes you focus on things like composition, flower structure, lighting and contrast – all skills we’re looking to develop as photographers! Regular shots, macro, wide angle…that’s up to you. The only restriction is that all photos entered in this contest must be taken in July 2008.

Looking for inspiration? Check out these examples from the group pool, or visit the Fleur Noir group on Flickr. There’s also a great group project on this Utata thread: www.flickr.com/groups/utata/discuss/72157604735683279/?se...

Ranunculus in b&w

Agapanthus

Transparent B&W

Better in B&W

Black and White Snow Blossoms

As usual, the winner of this contest will not only gain the distinction of having their photo chosen as the best by their peers, but will also be spotlighted on our group's front page for a whole month! So please, read the rules carefully, get shooting, and submit your best photo! And have fun!

SPECIFIC RULES:

-Only ONE entry per person please!

-When you post your photo, please number it in sequence with the rest of the photos posted.

-In order for your entry to be eligible to win, you must vote. If you do not vote by the end of the voting period, your entry will be disqualified (even if it has the most votes!).

-If you want to change your entry, DO NOT delete you entry post, but instead simply choose "edit" on your initial post and copy and paste the link from your new entry over the old one. That will help us keep entries in order.

PROHIBITIONS:
-NO post-processed frames, fancy borders, edging, etc (Yes, even that "little black border" or drop shadows)! This is to keep the images in our virtual "gallery" as uniform as possible for ease of judging.

OTHER IMPORTANT RULES:

-All photos MUST be taken during July 2008. No exceptions! Photos can be from any type of camera (including regular film), though EXIF data must be available OR Lens used, aperture setting, focal distance, and ISO setting posted in the description of the photo.

-PLEASE tag your photo with the following tag: stlmc0014. Make sure you use lowercase letters in your tag, as shown here, and remember, ONLY ONE ENTRY PER MEMBER PLEASE.

Entrants will be accepted up until Midnight, EDT (USA) on August 2nd (to give you a little extra time to process pics taken in the last few days of July), 2008. All entries will then be voted on by the whole group! The voting will begin the next day, and last for 5 days, before the winner/runner up and honorable mentions are awarded.

There is no real "prize" other than the honor of being selected by your peers AND the knowledge that you have just Shot and Learned something about yourself.

Another reminder: if you processed your image from a color image (and lost you EXIF data in the process) PLEASE make sure you have the original image with EXIF data in your photostream and include a link to that for our reference.

This group is about learning, and seeing a person's camera settings for a shot helps!

If your image does not have EXIF data available, or a link to the original image with EXIF is not provided, your entry WILL be removed.

How do you know if your EXIF data is available? On the right-hand side of your photo's Flickr page under "Additional Information" it should list the type of camera you took the picture with and also "More Properties". If you click on "More Properties" it will display your EXIF data.

Oops - my bad! I've spent the last three days out in the field at a Botany class and completely spaced on closing the contest!

Please note that the last two contest entries were deleted because they weren't taken in July (one taken in August and one in June). As stated in the rules, flower photos must have been taken in July to qualify for the contest - sorry!

So - this contest is now officially closed for entries.

Please begin voting for your first, second and third choice of photos. Thanks!

Thanks to everyone who liked my shot, (and to those who helped a new member learn the ropes).

This agapanthus had just dropped its petals but was still green, soft and translucent. With a shallow depth of field (f4), to blur the main part, and some severe back lighting to make the blurred parts glow, I was able to get the effect I wanted. Somewhat like eyes looking back.
