CHEAP FILTERS!
Um, sorry. Ok. Hello and welcome to Shooting Through Sunglasses!
THE SHORT VERSION:
Ever experimented, using your sunglasses as a filter? Or perhaps you’ve thought about it? Well, here’s a place to post the results of such experimentation. This is a public group and we look forward to seeing your shady shots! 8^)
THE OTHER VERSION:
This is a celebration of cheap or improvised filters -- SPECIFICALLY SUNGLASSES -- and the wonderful shots we can sometimes produce by using them.
A simple and cheap idea, indeed, and putting it into practice can be a lot of fun.
And now for a brief statement by Mr. TRONA:
The idea, for me, was inspired by my need to play. Camera filters are readily available and a shrewd shopper could probably build a collection inexpensively -- through their local photo shop or even, say, via eBay. There are actually quite a few of them around my house @ the moment. But it seems like a lot more fun, in the field, to just pull the shades off and grab a shot.
I first tried this years ago on a whim, and more recently went to a discount store and purchased several pairs of very cheap sunglasses -- in a variety of colors -- w/ the intention of using them as filters -- to shoot through them. 8^) The cheap ones are fun (especially) because, well, this is hazardous business -- easy to drop, scratch, or otherwise destroy sunglasses in the process. The dollar store is definitely the place because you can possibly find some funky colors, and if it doesn't work out (for whatever reason) or you lose the glasses, it's only a buck (or so =).
My experience with real filters is limited, but I shoot through sunglasses quite often as I follow some compulsion to grab shots of clouds as they block out the sun (the opportunity can pass in the twinkling of an eye), leaving something absolutely brilliant, and me struggling to capture even a hint of the moment.
The wonderful Denim was kind enough to join me in this venture, and we are the admins, aka The Strange Ones (well, I’m rather strange, and she’s incredibly nice… BUT, I like the sound of it! ;). And should you decide to join, dear Flickr compatriot, you will be a "Cool One" (if you’re even reading this, you already are! ;). Thank you for stopping by, and I hope that you indeed enlist in our sunglass shooting silliness!
And now for a brief statement by Denim:
On my quest for an about page I found some great tips for using sunglasses as filters.
So, even if a filter can not attach to your point and shoot you can still hold a pair of sunglasses up to the lens for a really cool effect. There are so many different types of shades that results will be endless. I am already thinking of the yellow, fake gucci frames I stashed away in case I get perfect vision.
Clip on sunglasses might be an easy way of filtering or just the lens of a broken pair.
I have also read that making sure the sun is over your left or right shoulder seems to enhance the polarizing effect.
OK.....
Please feel free to contact either Denim or Mr. TRONA with any comments or questions.
Happy shooting,
Denim
