About Sholley Sightings

To my mind, a "Sholley", to be precise, is a personal multi-wheeled shopping conveyance or assistant that are the penchant of the old lady or gentlemen when "out and about" in town. Guaranteed to cause you maximum annoyance and discomfort, as they block the streets / aisles and clip your ankles as they drag or push them past you.

I think I'm right in saying that the term "Sholley" came about as a mangled mix of the two words "shopping" and trolley" to make "Sholley", but if there are any Historians out there that know better, please drop me a line. "Caddy" is another name for these fine creations of shopping convenience too.

My good chum, Al, says here;

"Or you get on the bus, put your sholley somewhere in the way, detach the bag and shuffle back up to the front of the bus. You then rifle through it looking for your pass before you eventually find it. Then, and only then may you think about finding a seat. Not just any seat will do though, you have to find the perfect one. This process should take no less than three minutes."

"You can then sit down and start moaning about how the buses are always late and how the drivers never let you sit down before they pull away. Then you get off at the next stop, a whole 800 yards down the road."

"Now THAT, my friends, is the Sholley way!"

;-)

If you want a genuine one, have a look at the "official" Sholley site here; www.sholley.com/.

"Marketeer" (love that name; makes it sound like there's gangs of old ladies flashing foils around Town, with cries of "All for one, and one for all!") also do a great line in Sholleys with real gems of model names, like "Shoppy", "Chelsea", "4 Wheel", "Stroller", "Paris" etc.

The legendary "Coopers of Stortford" also sell a fine three-wheeled bogey version here, specifically designed to climb stairs, and a "bog-standard"-looking, but insulated model right here. If you seek a more traditional "country" look, then this design of theirs may suit you better.

If none of the above floats your boat, try "Rolser", who have the most excellently named site; http://www.thetrolleyrevolution.com/, containing some awesome photographs featuring Sholleys. Like they say, "Welcome to The Shopping Trolley Revolution!".

"Domo" is also worth a look as well.

For the true "ultimate" Sholley, please have a look at this stunning example right here.

Please feel free to upload your own "Sholley"-sightings into the group.

Regards

James (UK)
