About Shiritori - 尻取り

尻取り(しりとり)は日本の言葉遊びのひとつです。日本語の「ひらがな」か「カタカナ」を知ってさえいれば遊び方はかんたん!
SHIRITORI is a Japanese word game. The rules are simple but you have to know some Japanese words as well as hiragana and / or katakana to play.

<遊び方>
HOW TO PLAY
------------------------------------
. . . 1) グループ最初の言葉は「ねこ」("cat" in English). 最後の文字は「こ」です。
. . . 1) The first photo in the pool is a cat, 'neko' ('ねこ in Japanese). Notice the last character of 'neko' is 'ko' (こ).

. . . 2) 次は「こ」で始まるものが写っていること。ここでは花の「こぶし」(magnolia)の写真。
. . . 2) The subject of the next photo has to start with that same character - こ ('ko'), for example 'kobushi' コブシ (magnolia).

. . . 3) 最後が「ん」で終わる言葉(被写体)では参加できません。日本語には「ん」で始まる言葉がないので、そこで終わってしまうからです。
. . . 3) A word cannot end with the character 'n' (ん) as there is no word that starts with ん ('n') in standard Japanese!.

. . . 4) 外来語(ピンク、シャツ、グロテスクなど)もカタカナを使えばO.K.。
. . . 4) Foreign loan words are OK - but use the Japanese katakana spelling! For example, ピンク = pink, シャツ = shirt and グロテスク = grotesque!

. . . 5) 語尾がのびる言葉は次の例のとおり。
灯籠 とうろう → 「う」("海" など)。「ろ」で始まる言葉でもO.K.
コーヒー → 「ひ」("ひよこ" など)と「い」("石" など)どちらもO.K.
. . . 5) We are not too picky about endings here, so while the proper word to follow 灯籠 とうろう would start with "う", such as 海 うみ, a word starting with ろ would not be disallowed. Some katakana words end with a long vowel like "Coffee" which is usually written "コーヒー", not "こうひい" or "こーひー" although those too can be found. In this case, the following word can start with either "ひ" or "い"; for example ひよこ or 石 いし.

. . . 6) 固有名詞(人や場所の名前)もO.K. ただし、カタカナかひらがなで書くこと。
. . . 6) Proper names are allowed. In the case of foreign names try to make sure you know the proper Japanese spelling!

. . . 7) では、やってみましょう!
 ねこ→こぶし→しょうじ→?
. . . 7) Still not sure? Go to the first picture and follow the sequence! So far we have - neko kobushi shoji (ねこ こぶし しょうじ).
