About Sheepshead Bay

Sheepshead Bay was a fishing village which later turned into a community of homes for the rich, and contained a race track which was one of the leading horse courses of its time. When horse racing was banned in NY in 1911 it was converted into one of the earliest auto racing facilities. The closure of the track in 1919 led to a land development boom which changed the community from a semi-rural to a semi-urban one. The 1960s led to another increase in building, with mainly apartment houses being built on previously undeveloped land. Currently we are seeing another such boom, the focus this time being on building multi-unit townhouses.
