About Conscience is the Color Green: San Francisco

Conscience is the color green.

San Francisco is a green city that is becoming even more so because of its continued implementation of an array of green policies (vegetable-oil buses, reduction of pet bottles, no plastic grocery bags).

This group is for pictures of green San Francisco, specifically images of the places, objects or methods that are making this wonderful city even more environmentally friendly. We don't want pictures of parks and trees unless there is something specific about the creation of that park or the planting of that tree that was calculated to improve the city's environment. We DO definitely want pictures of specific policies and environmental projects put into practice. Explanations beneath your pictures are helpful but not entirely necessary.

Pictures from this pool will be considered for publication in a photography spread as a part of a feature on green San Francisco in the July/August 2008 edition of Heso Magazine. This publication is a bilingual (English and Japanese) culture magazine based in Japan. It regularly features interviews with luminaries, the work of esteemed photographers, essays on topics of social and cultural interest, introductions to NGOs/NPOs, art, poetry, music reviews, movies revisited, books reconsidered, and more. The magazine is available for free in select areas of Fukuoka (southern Japan), Tokyo and Yokohama where sponsors are located, and is available by mail order over the internet (currently there are orders from about a dozen countries). Heso Magazine is a small, grassroots-style publication and the people who make it possible work primarily on a volunteer basis (translators receive token wages for their hard work and others occasionally receive Fair Trade products. And frothy pints). Photographers whose work is selected for this spread will of course be credited and will receive free issues of Heso Magazine.

Finally, Heso Magazine is painfully aware of its environmental impact as printed matter. We use recycled paper and soy ink, and print well below demand for the copies to ensure that there is no waste. We are actively pursuing ways to move Heso Magazine to digital platforms for returning readers.

It is our hope that even after the magazine is printed, this group will continue to remain active, showcasing for the increasingly urbanized world how a city can be both densely populated and yet also kind to the environment.
