Like Szasz, I am keen to distinguish between two kinds of mal de la tete.

There are those engendered by some unquestionably identifiable physiological condition.

And then there are the made-up "mental illnesses" such as schizophrenia, ODD or "Oppositional Defiant Disorder", "Not Voting Disorder" and the recently discovered FORM, "Foreigner Overenthusiastic Religious Mania. You can easily get FORM these days.

However, people seem to insist on real causes for the otherwise - scientifically speaking - imaginary "mental" ailments which friends, relatives and the people getting paid for a "solution" all find it convenient to agree the victim has acquired.

For instance it is commonly asserted that his or her condition was "caused by the war" or "by his accident" rather than by his decision to go marching off or to drive into that bus queue.

The point here is to distinguish between post-traumatic stress disorder which is a real syndrome with measurable biochemical markers and something like "guilt", for which a meter reading is not available.

Sent 'im Mental is the group to post photos representing the inanimate objects or external events believed to have occasioned the need for psychiatric intervention. Please explain why you do (or why someone did) believe this.

Or if you have a new disorder to announce - especially one with a catchy acronym - you can do that too.

Where not otherwise stated, all of the illnesses portrayed are the result of alcohol or government-approved drugs.
