Hmmm, what about having a theme (weekly? ad-hoc? whenever a good theme idea comes along?) and showcasing the best or a random selection of them on the site?
Maybe post a call for specific shots for upcoming story ideas on the Flickr group discussions.
Or how about a monthly highlighted Seattle area photog. Showcase an editor's selection of pics submitted to the Seattlest group pool along with an interview.
Those are off the top of my head. :)

How about a book compiled of pics of the day from the last year... could be sold with proceeds going to local charities.

A book is a good idea. Blurb.com makes it pretty easy to put a book together and sell it on their site with no overhead. That's what Flickr used for their Day Of Flickr promotion and road show.

These are great ideas. The interview one has been kicking around the back of my head for a while, and really just requires me getting off my butt to get it started.
If we were to do themes and calls for specific shots, how do you want them announced? For that matter, how do you want them rewarded? We don't have access to lots of swag -- at least, I don't -- but is that necessary?
Another idea we've been mulling at Seattlest HQ: some sort of gallery show for our favorite photos, at a local hangout. Is that attractive?

A gallery show would be very cool.

If you setup a weekly/monthly/whatever reoccurring thing, you could announce them on this group and Seattlest at the same time. That way you catch everyone, though everyone should be reading the site anyway right?
I don't think a reward is necessary for reoccurring photo themes. Perhaps having a more structured photo contest where site visitors vote on their favorite would warrant a prize, but that is up to you. :)
A gallery would be sweet. I would love to have a shot of mine featured along with some of the great shots that turn up in the Seattlest pool.

Maps / locations that are recently popular? Photos of a specific event or a new place from the pool...

Gallery show would be cool. No need for swag - I am sure you guys at Seattlest are connected with some gallery. Maybe the twelve chosen from monthly themes -- seasons, events, iconic architecture, etc. Weekly might be a bit much -- but monthly could be managed -- then a small gallery show with the twelve selected? Announce it here in your flickr thread -- another reason to keep an eye on it!!

As a PNW native who has temporarily strayed from home, I have to second the suggestion of an annual gallery show. The DCist photographer's exposition has been incredible successful out here, and I think it would be equally welcomed in Seattle. In DC, there is a big opening night celebration and then the show stays up for a couple of weeks, with the photos displayed on sale. This year, they had a panel discussion half-way through the show featuring a few prominent figures in the local art/photography world. It seems like a great way to support the local art scene, plus give a big boost to the primarily non-professional photographers whose work is selected.

how about a weekly contest, which will urge people to head out and take pictures for a specific theme/purpose. it would be the same day each week, where users would post their one photo in the thread, and the winner would be chosen by either your staff, or the peers. the user could be awarded an actual prize or just props.
i'd participate.

Excellent ideas. Sorry to be unresponsive -- I've been too busy to post much on Seattlest recently, much less plan a gallery show. I'll poke the Seattlest hivemind and see if anyone has a gallery or space they recommend. And maybe I'll try to contact DCist and see how they do it.

OK, it's been a year - just wanted to bring your attention to how awesome (and HUGE) the DCist photography show was this year - I really think this could be successful in Seattle, too. It's a great way to support local photographers, both amateur and pro, and get people interested in the local arts scene. DCist managing and arts editor Heather Goss is the force behind it all. It seems like it's been a great way to spread the word about the DCist blog.

I definitely dig the idea of a Seattleist gallery show. I'd rather see it happen in an actual gallery, rather than a coffee house. Ultimately, it comes down to what's possible though.
It might also be kind of nice to put together a calendar.

Calendar with proceeds to a charity or shelter would be awesome. You could pick the photos or set up some sort of a voting system.

You could do a coffee table art book of the best images. Or start doing a regular magazine of the best images.
One of the groups I admin, [http://www.flickr.com/groups/censorshipsucks/discuss/], recently did both and the results were great.
In our case, the magazine was printed through MagCloud and the book through Blurb.
