About Sculpted Places

Sculpted Places explores vernacular architectural and garden landscapes, specifically public sculpture (monuments and memorials) and gardens at sites throughout the world. Most any public art and/or gardens can be added. However, we are most interested in those statues and/or gardens that express community, national, and ethnic identity in 19th and 20th century cities. What stories are statues and gardens telling us? Where are these stories (i.e. can they be geo-located)? When was the statue or garden created, dedicated, and/or relocated? Who are the artists and/or architects, designers and/or funders, and communities involved? Are there common figures and/or stories, which recur in place after place?

Novelist Robert Musil writes that nothing is as invisible as monuments. This group attempts to recover monuments and memorials, and to *place* them.
