Wide angle lenses for a 400d + Ikelite housing

Hiya

I'm looking for some advice on which super wide-angle lens to get for my Canon 400d. It'll either be a Canon 10-22mm or the Sigma 10-20mm. I use an Ikelite housing, so I'm limited to those ports. All other things being equal, I'd get the Sigma because it's cheaper and (assuming I make sure), the image quality is comparable.

The main question then relates to the ports. The The ikelite port for the Canon allows you to use the zoom, but doesn't for th Sigma so you have to choose your focal length for the whole dive. Having never shot wide-angle with a DSLR, I'm not sure how much of a problem this would be. Does anyone have any advice? I shoot in temperate water in Scotland (UK), so getting close is really the only way of taking most shots without all the muck getting in the way.

Thank you for your help!

Hi Zan,

The ability to crank the zoom when you're down below would probably be enough to make up my mind by itself.

Given the choice I'd definitely go for the Canon. It's a fantastic lens and being a bit faster the the Sigma can only help when you're down below.

Given the amount of money you're talking about in putting this kit together I'd expect the price delta between the Sigma and Canon lenses is pretty insignificant.

One thing you'll notice when you go wide is that on the 10mm side you'll find lots of distortion which you can of course leave in or correct in post. The 20mm has much much less and for my taste usually doesn't take much post processing.

That being said and as murky as you make it out to be, wide angle might not be the best bet.

I'm very happy with the Tokina 10-17, 400D and ikelite too.

Hi Zan,

I'm with monkeywobble on this one, the option of actually using the zoom while underwater would swing it for me. If I had to be limited to one focal length I'd probably opt to go with a fast, wide prime lens!

Ultra wide angles DO distort subjects BUT because of the light fall off, wide angle and getting closer to the subject seems to be the popular recommendation.

Personally, I'd opt for the wide (but not too wide), fast prime lens.

Hope this helps.

I also have the Tokina 10-17 and it is a wonderful piece of glass. I have it in a 6" Ike port and do get some vignetting, but nothing that I can't live with. An 8" would solve this.

cool.
thanks for all the advice everyone, it's good to know. I've heard excellent things about the tokina lens, but I was thinking of sticking to a rectilinear one to start with. The tokina is def a very close second though, as I can't imagine it'll take long before I want to play with a fisheye!
I haven't seen any fast primes that are as wide as these zoom lenses - perhaps I'm wrong, but aren't these the only options for super-wide angles at the moment on a cropped sensor camera?
At any rate, I think I'll go with the Canon - it's got a wee bit more speed and I'm sure I'll wish I had the zoom as soon as I don't have it :0)
Thanks again for the help

I'm trying to decide which lens to get for underwater work. I tend to take landscapes above water, so I figure I should go wide first.

Has anybody used the Canon EF-S 10-22mm for underwater shots?

It's between that, and the Tokina, which would require the same port as my cheapie kit lens.
