1 : writing material (as a parchment or tablet) used one or more times after earlier writing has been erased
2 : something having usually diverse layers or aspects apparent beneath the surface
Concentrating on the second definition (although photographs of scraped and reused parchment would, indeed, work very well). Photographs could be of faded posters on a city wall, or a bit of ground from which the past seems to be erupting, or whatever the idea provokes in you. A collective effort to photograph beneath the surface.
