04 Aug 07 - Almighty God, Redeemer:
The sap of life in our bones and being is Yours,
lifting us to ecstasy.
But always in the beauty,
the tang of sin, in our consciences,
The dry lichen of sins long dead,
but seared upon our minds.
In the garden that is each of us,
always the thorn.
--The Rev. George F. McLeod

The Scottish Exec on spirituality in the NHS
Until recently, spiritual care has been seen as something provided by the chaplain or appropriate minister, mainly to patients, and spirituality has been seen asa predominantly religious issue. However, spirituality is now taking on a broader definition that alludes to the well-being of the carer and cared for, encompassing the intangibility of the soul and spirit as well as the tangibility of the body.

Me old mucker Prof John Swinton of Aberdeen University
traditionally spirituality and religion used to be viewed as synonymous, this is not necessarily the case in postmodern Britain. The term ‘spirituality’ has a variety of different meanings, some of them religiously oriented, but many having no formal connection to religion. People describe spirituality as having to do with such things as the search for meaning, connection, hope, value and purpose. For some people the quest for spirituality is expressed in religious terms, for others it expresses itself in other ways such as how it adds to meaningful relationship and the search for ways of feeling valued and cared for. So spirituality may include religion but it is not limited to it.
