About Scale figures
The use of scale figures (humans!) to give the viewer a (real) sense of the size/scale of a real life object.
Often architects use scale figures by putting in simple drawings of people in their sketches in order to the viewer a sense of scale since the size of a person is a reletively good scale measure.
Just put a person in front of a building etc would do the trick. The effect is of course stronger the closer the person is to the object. Having people in the foreground and the object far behind does not work as scale figures. And of course the other way around.
Sometimes in pictures when the scale figure is very small the perceived scale is completely altered when the viewer spots the figure.
