About Save Gulf Branch Nature Center
This is a flickr group dedicated to saving Gulf Branch Nature Center. Gulf Branch Nature Center is the main attraction at Arlington County's Gulf Branch Natural Area, which preserves the natural beauty of the lands that abut a small tributary stream of the Potomac known locally as "Gulf Branch."
The nature center features exhibits on local wildlife, indigenous peolpes of the region and early settlers. It is both a natural and historical gem in Arlington County. The Center also administers a garden, a restored early settler's cabin known as the "Robert Walker Log House," several works of art, and the "Gulf Branch Forge," another restored work depicting Virginia history. Unfortunately, Arlington County intends to close this wonderful resource on July 1st and then demolish it.
The joy that this center has given us and our families should be shared for many generations to come. Please post your best photos taken at the Gulf Branch Natural Area and the Gulf Branch Nature Center, and participate in the discussion threads which provide details on how you can help.
Park Attractions and Highlights

Gulf Branch features Arlington's only nature center with a Native American exhibit, and adequate room for preschool & elementary school programs.

The Robert Walker Log House was dedicated on this site to the Women's Club of Arlington in 1979. The house was built from materials rescued from the homestead of Robert Walker, and early Arlington resident.
Today the house is used in interpretive programs, and stands as a reminder of Arlington's early history.
Robert Walker (1840-1908) was an active and respected member of his church and community. In 1871, Robert built a four room log house at the present-day location of 4211 Old Glebe Rd.
After many renovations and additions, the house was sold to the County in 1967 and converted into the Glebe Recreation Center. Two years after the center was closed in 1976, as much of the 1871 structure as could be salvaed was transported to Gulf Branch Nature Center. In 1979 the construction of a new log house, utilizing these original materials, was completed.

The Gulf Branch Forge preserves a chapter of Arlington's early.

Festivals and other fun activities for all ages.

Beautiful grounds suitable for hiking and exploring Virginia history throughout all seasons.

In addition to being a fine architectural work, the nature center provides programs for the children in Arlington County's public schools, and serves as a center for conservation, education and local history.
