About Save Domino

PURPOSE: Share info on battle to landmark Brooklyn's Domino Sugar Refinery and share photos of same (for possible use in exhibit and advocacy materials).

Williamsburg and Greenpoint started out as industrial neighborhoods over 150 years ago. The hulking, old factories and warehouses are a big part of what makes these neighborhoods unique.

Thanks to rezoning, virtually all these brooding old giants (like the Greenpoint Terminal Market, Austin-Nichols warehouse, Matchett Candy factory, Eberhard Faber Pencil buildings, and many more) are threatened and very likely to be razed.

What will take their place? Bland, 40-story luxury condo towers. UNLESS we fight to get the best buildings landmarked. The Waterfront Preservation Alliance is a small Williamsburg-based group that's fighting to get the Landmarks Preservation Commission to consider the best buildings for landmark status. Our current objective is protecting the Domino Sugar Refinery.

We're not against development. We just want to see it done in a way that incorporates the neighborhoods' history, fits into the existing context, and includes affordable housing.
