a few years ago, sonja from sonjaartisania generously put out these free patterns:

Gnomlette Pattern by sonjaartisania

Fancy Mushroom Pattern by sonjaartisania

and since i'm too lazy to paper piece : ), i free pieced them instead:

and a few mushrooms

i was even inspired to make a mushroom house (imagine that!):

which sonja turned into a pattern:

for your block, you can make any combo of mushrooms and/or gnomes! the patterns are paper pieced, but i like to use them as a guide for free piecing. i usually piece them in the same order as the paper pattern, but i just don't sew it on to the paper and i mix the angles up a bit.
what's this? a free pieced gnome by krommama

in this picture, you can see how i start. i start with the face and add the clothes and hat, then i cut a triangle shape out of it varying the angles to give the gnome more personallity.

give it a try, and please let me know if you want me to take more pictures to show you how. this is probably the trickiest block we are doing, but i know you can do it!

so... would you say the gnome is pieced in roughly the same order as Sonja's paper pieced pattern--only not attached to paper? : )

molly - yes! but i make the triangle body/head part, then add background to that (like a triangle roof and background pieces on either side) then i make the legs and background and add them to the body part like you do with the girl. if you look at the last gnome (orange one) you can see how i pieced it.

I saw gnomeo and juliet with my son. While I had fun with a date with just one child...the movie was pretty dreadful. Wait until is comes to netflix.

just to confirm, that for this month, there is only one block with both the gnome and the mushroom in the block? Or are we talking two separate blocks...
