About Santa Monica Bay: Los Angeles Rivers, Coast and Ocean
This group was started by the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission (www.santamonicabay.org), with the hopes of pooling together some of the best web photographers and photography of natural resources in Los Angeles.
The Santa Monica Bay--the crescent of coast running adjacent to the Los Angeles metropolitan area--is an area of both natural beauty and human infrastructure. The Bay has lost over 90% of its natural coastal areas, but precious areas of wildness remain. The Bay has rocky tidepools, breathtaking bluffs, sandy beaches, to which many existing and historic wetlands, creeks, and streams flow. Even though we now live in a very urbanized and paved environment, we still interact with nature and directly impact our surrounding environment and the ocean.
This group is about a vision in which the inland and ocean waters, natural resources, and Bay benefits and values are restored, enhanced, and protected, and a sustainable balance is maintained between humans and the environment. Additionally, part of our vision for this group is that it becomes a resource for anyone interested in finding quality photos of our local environment for their publications, research, studies, school reports, and more.
SMBRC produces a variety of print and electronic media to educate and inform the public about scientific studies, policies, projects, and other activities in the Santa Monica Bay and inland areas that drain to the Bay. Photographers from this group pool may be invited by SMBRC to have selected photos featured in our various publications, reports, brochures, on our website, and more.
Photos will not be used without permission, and photos are credited to the photographer.
Generally speaking, SMBRC is looking to gather photographs (both positive and negative) of our local natural environment, of humans interacting with the environment, and of human impacts on the environment.
