About Tulum: Walled City of the Maya

The ruins of the Maya city of Tulum stand atop high cliffs overlooking the sparkling waters of the Caribbean sea. Tulum was one of the last cities inhabited and built by the Mayans, it was at its height between the 13th and 15th centuries and managed to survive about 70 years after the Spanish began occupying Mexico.

Looking out on the Caribbean from Tulum

Tulum is a rarity among Mayan sites both for being surrounded by walls and being built on the sea. The Maya refrained from building large structures on the coast for fear that invaders would spot them from the sea. To protect against this, the builders of Tulum originally had plastered and painted the cliffs and walls of the buildings a sky blue.
