About Ireland's Royal Canal

This group is for quality shots of the Royal Canal in Ireland. Please also add your photos to your map (i.e. geotag them) so that others can see where along the canal your shot was taken.

The Royal Canal runs from the river Liffey in Dublin to the river Shannon near Longford. There used to be branches from the mainline to Broadstone in Dublin (originally considered the start of the canal), and Longford. On the way the canal passes through Manyooth, Kilcock, Enfield, and Mullingar among many other places.

The canal was started in 1790, but did not reach the Shannon until 1817. In the 1960s the canal fell into disrepair, but in recent years a large-scale restoration has been under way, and most of the canal is now open for navigation again.
