About Ronald Searle

Ronald Searle (3 March 1920 – 30 December 2011) was a highly influential and immensely prolific British artist, a "hand" cartoonist who will be always remembered for his caustic wit and whimsical spindly illustrations.

Employing a minimalist droll style, Mr. Searle produced work for The New Yorker, Punch, Life, The New York Times, Holiday, TV Guide, The International Herald Tribune, and France's Le Monde. He is arguably best known as the creator of the wickedly satirical St Trinian's and a contributor to the Molesworth series. The British cartoonist also designed wry, occasionally absurd advertisements for Church's shoes and U.S. Rubber and the film titles for such films as "The Happiest Day of Your Life" (1950), "The Belles of St. Trinian's" (1954), and "Scrooge" (1970), to name just a few. Searle was a set designer on the 1955 film "On the Twelfth Day", production desinger on a pair of films, "Energetically Yours" (1957) and "Dick Deadeye, or Duty Done" (1975), and both a set and costume designer on 1963's "The King's Breakfast".

The group icon you see on this page is of a cat. Searle had a soft spot for cats, which were the subjects of two of his books, "Searle's Cats" (1967) and "More Cats" (1975).
