21 Sep 08 - Romania is fortunate in having preserved to these modern times a great diversity of traditional artizanal centres of pottery, steeped in ancient history. This is a blessing in a society which is "modernising" so fast that soon it might lose its identity.
the great variety is due to a still robust rural population whose specificity remains to some extent constrained by the geography of its mountains and valleys separating the villages and towns.

About Romanian pottery

The main focus is on 18th to 21st century peasant pottery, glazed or unglazed (terracotta), fired in reduction kilns (black pottery from Marginea) with zgrafitti or normal red clay pottery, painted or unpainted ranging from plates, bowls to jugs or figurines.
The ethos is to capture the village pottery of simple folk selling their wares in the market place and NOT the pieces intended for tourist market which make concessions to international "taste".
Looking for examples from such centres as Oboga, Marginea, Miercurea Ciuc, Baia Mare, any of the Saxon blue and white pottery, or Hungarian and Romanian.

Another facet of this Group is the recording of the very rich heritage of Neolithic pottery on the territory of Romania which presents some of the most exciting artefacts ever to be produced in Europe: clay goddesses of Fertility, figurines, vases with antropomorphic and zoomorphic decorations (Gumelnita, Cucuteni).
