About Rolls Royce Silver Cloud
The Rolls Royce Silver Cloud was a four door luxury sedan launched by Rolls Royce in 1955. It was designed by J.P. Blatchley, and assembled in Crew, England. Before production of the Silver Cloud ended in 1966, 7372 were built. Over those eleven years, Rolls Royce built three different models of Silver Clouds; the Silver Cloud I, Silver Cloud II, and Silver Cloud III. The first two were very similar in looks, but the third was easily distinguished by its four headlights.
Rolls Royce began production of the Silver Cloud I as a 1955 model. It feautured a 155 hp straight-6 engine and a four speed automatic as its standard transmission. The Silver Cloud I had a top speed of about 102 mph and accelerated from zero to sixty miles per hour in 13.5 seconds. Power steering and air conditioning became options in 1956, and in 1957, an extended wheelbase version was created. Production of the Silver Cloud I ended in 1958, and production of the Silver Cloud II began in 1959.
For the 1959 model year, the Silver Cloud came in three body styles: foor door saloon, two door convertible, or two door coupe. Thanks to a new 6.2 L V-8 engine, maximum speed and acceleration improved for the Silver Cloud II. It could reach a top speed of around 104 mph and dash from zero to sixty miles per hour in 10.9 seconds. Power steering became standard and electric windows were now an option. Rolls Royce ended production of the Silver Cloud II in 1962.
Rolls Royce introduced the next and final Silver Cloud in 1963, the Silver Cloud III. Like the Silver Cloud II, it could be purchased as a saloon, coupe, or convertible. Performance was slightly boosted and, and the interior was remodelled. The most obvious change, perhaps, were the two extra headlights. That made four, two on each side. In 1966, production of the Silver Cloud III ended, marking the end of the Silver Cloud altogether.
Throghout the eleven years it was in production, the Silver Cloud was Rolls Royce's most prominent model. It will always be known for its elegant design. The Silver Cloud was actually the car that inspired the famous advertising line "At 60 miles an hour, the loudest noise in this new Rolls Royce comes from the electric clock."
