About Temppeliaukio Church (Rock Church)

Temppeliaukio Church (Rock Church), Helsinki, Finland. The Finns usually just call it 'Temppeliaukion kirkko', (Temppeliaukio church), the Finnish equivalent of 'Rock Church' is not used. A unique church hewn (well, rather blasted, you can still see the signs of drill holes) into a rock, one ot the tourist sights of Helsinki. Every Sunday it has services in Finnish, Swedish and English. It is a very popular concert church. The International Evangelical Church (IEC), has members from over 30 nations.
Tourists come by busloads, sometimes it is difficult for them to accept it if the building is in use and they are refused entrance. But it's first purpose is to serve the parishioners. I hope that some who could not get inside and are unhappy having missed it, will find their way to this site and its fine photos.
Yet, tourists are very welcome, they can buy postcards and slides, sometimes there is live music, another times a CD is playing.

Latest information: The International Evangelical Church (IEC) had its services (in English) at the church for 36 years. When the building was closed for repairs for 5 months in the beginning of 2011, the church had it's services at "Christ Church", Apollonkatu 5, at 14.30 (note the change of time). After the repairs were finished, we were not allowed back to the Rock Church, which is a pity for visiting tourists who want to join the services.
