Mike.Hanlon  Pro User  says:

I just wanted to see how many peeps we got going so far.

March 26th @ 6:30pm
Bodhi's Cafe' in the Village Gate Plaza, Rochester NY
Gather there, then go upstairs to shoot.

People I am bringing:
2 friends who are photogs.
1 friend who's modeling
2 others who may come to model if work doesn't need them.

Gear:
All my lighting gear and camera stuff.
a MiniDV camera (to tape shoots that we can hopefully add to a montage of still photos and music for showing off our "mad skillz" on youtube.)

It would be cool to have name tags, anyone got flickr tags? I thought I saw them in photos from a past meet of yours.

Can we all "tag" our photos the same so a simple search shows them all? Something like..

rochester "march meetup" "village gate" strobist "your name here"

Just a thought. I'm sure more can be added.

For those who have no idea what I'm talking about with regards to "strobist". Please visit www.strobist.blogspot.com/
Go through the "lighting 101" section. Its all basic lighting theory that really makes you go "oh yeah, duh".

All are welcome to use my lighting gear. I cant wait to meet you all & see what we can produce.

*Raises hand*
I'll be shooting, and I'll model if there aren't enough models to go around. I have a little bit of experience.
I don't have any fancy equipment :(
If we set up an event on upcoming.yahoo.com, an automatic flickr tag will be generated that we can all use. For example, if you search for the tag "upcoming:event=434567", that brings up photos from our last meet-up.

I'm coming. By myself. First timer. So be nice. No fancy equipment either. I will bring a Nikon D40 and a variety of lomos (Holga, Diana, and fisheye) and lots of film. And yes, I am willing to share whatever I bring.

I have shot at VG a couple of times. I do not think we will have a problem. I did get permission for a group shoot we did with DWF members. They were very nice about it. However if you ask permission thay are probably going to want to know about insurance.

Very limited power. There are outlets in the center of the room, but I'm not sure we will get permission to use them or if they actually have power.

Instead of ambiguous tagging and headcounting, just reply at Upcoming and tag your photos “upcoming:event=450723” and watch them appear magically. See last month for an example. It's truly easy.

In case i haven't made it clear after all these months, both Upcoming and Flickr share Yahoo logins.

So far it appears 7 people are coming, plus the two I invited. Not bad.

jlam, i used the "upcoming" site and it worked pretty well. The username threw me at first because I was trying to log in with my yahoo id again, after I already did. Not realizing it wanted me to create a new user name for a loging.

Yea, why doesn't it surprise me not more Flickr Rochesterians have yet to adopt Upcoming? Many in Web 2.0 community have already joined, and even before the Yahoo acquisitions, Flickr had the largest Upcoming group.

The magic wiring doesn't end quite here. Upcoming also syndicates/exports “webcal” not only of groups such as Flickr, but also for personal Upcoming calendars, for desktop apps such as Microsoft Outlook, Apple iCal, Mozilla Lightning and Sunbird and also web calendars such as Google Calendar and 30 Boxes, which can then sync' and share with personal and mobile organizers.

Upcoming also syndicates RSS and Atom feeds for nearly every page to tools such as FeedDemon (Windows), NetNewsWire (Macintosh), and even to browsers as “Live Bookmarks”. This all simplifies keeping up with events. Using Firefox, linkmarks (bookmarks) for events and recommendations from my own calendars and friends' calendars magically appear and then roll away after the event.

I'm in. I'll bring a couple of stands, umbrellas, umbrella holders, home made snoots, and 3 PocketWizards. Nikon folks can shoot via CLS. - I can help with that. We might want to consider breaking up into sub-groups based on how many people show up and the equipment that's being supplied. This will be my first meetup with you guys... I'm looking forward to it.

I wish Upcoming would just create an iCal event for for an event instead of a whole calendar.
Posted 21 months ago. ( permalink )

view photostream

jlam says:

Jon, it can. From the “Send to Calendar” pop-up beside the reply buttons, click or drag the first choice “iCal”: webcal://upcoming.yahoo.com/calendar/v2/event/450723

Of course, that's not the best way to use Upcoming. Instead, feed your personal Upcoming “webcal:” into Apple iCal, Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Sunbird or Lightning, Google Calendar, 30Boxes, and whatever other calendars you use and share. I also feed my personal calendar into lifestreaming sites such as Facebook and FriendFeed, and desktop apps such as NetNewWire, and (the older v1 RSS) into my Firefox events for one-click access. Then, events appear when i select either “watch” or “attend”, and scroll away after the event, to be left in browser histories.

Okay, then you want the second choice, “Add to Outlook Calendar”, with the http: resource, here linked. From Apple iCal you could also have dragged the event fed from your syndicated calendar onto your desktop.

Wouldnt hurt to bring them and leave them locked in the trunk.

So far, if all my "models" show, we might have a greater model to photog ratio.

For those just joining the conversation, in case this absurdly long thread fails to make clear, we're not meeting at Bodhi's nor 6:30p unless you plan to join us for dinner at the Gate House. upcoming.yahoo.com/event/450723/

Heaven help those who stop after the first message or fail to read most of the thread.

Lizardspd, it earns your photo a fave.

It also creates an uniform and unambiguous tag for the event. This simplifies finding the most interesting photos from several pages already, for example. It also cross-links each Flickr photograph of the event with the Upcoming event. Links, of course, are the lifeblood of the Web.

I'm looking through my pics now and hope to have some posted soon.

How do you tag it to show up in "interesting"?

"interesting" is an automatic algorithm that flickr has which decides which are the most interesting photos for a given tag or tags.
its based on favorites, views, comments notes etc,

most of the meets are more mingling than shooting so maybe April will be a good chance to actually talk to all the new people in the group. I get socially overloaded pretty easily it would be nice to have chill out meet with all the same people. i think this time around, new arrivals out-numbered the regulars by a good margin. its cool seeing all the photos show up, we should send an email to D.Hobby, maybe we this will show on the strobist blog.
Posted 21 months ago. ( permalink )

view photostream

jlam says:

LizardSpd, sending a tip to Hobby sounds like an awesome idea. Unless someone here objects or personally knows him, go ahead and write him.

Mike H, at flickr.com/explore/interesting Flickr explains “interesting”. At flickr.com/photos/mwhanlon/popular-interesting/ Flickr shows your own most interesting. As someone who has few favorites, so long as i don't look at it too much, flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days still remains my favorite page on the Web.

I forgot to add earlier, Upcoming is not the only site to use the Flickr programming interfaces. Last.fm does too and it organizes concerts and similar performance events better than Upcoming. For example, photos tagged lastfm:event=182497 end up on the Last.fm event Mike Doughty at Lilac Fest. (Hi Beth, that was before we met you!)

In principle any site or developer can register with Flickr to enable richer interaction with Flickr photographs. Breaking down the walls between sites is one key principle to making the Web more effective, and also one of the goals of Web 2.0.
