About Roadside Missouri

Missouri...

The "Show-Me State". The state that offers us the nostalgia of Route 66, the roadside kitsch of Meramec Caverns, Precious Moments Inspirational Park and Branson, the home of Jesse James and the grave of Daniel Boone. Even a "Nuclear Waste Adventure Trail & Museum"! The state that gave us folks such as Mark Twain, Harry Truman, Maya Angelou, Burt Bacharach, Chuck Berry, George Washington Carver, Walter Cronkite, J.C. Penney and many others. There's so much to see and do along the highways of Missouri that you could spend weeks travelling it and just scratch the surface. So then, this group will attempt to show you the "Show-Me" state. Let's all take a trip! :-)

What's OK here:

• This group is for photos taken on any Missouri roadway. Yes, even the Interstates (though that's boring), but more so on the U.S. or MO State routes, even County Roads. We envision this group to be sort of a picture book of the Missouri roadside. Show folks what they'd see if they came to the state and travelled it, instead of just passing through on the Interstates.

• Photos can be of most anything (historical sites, places, signs, parades, small towns, etc) as long as they're located on the road, and in Missouri. In particular, stuff like:

• Old Motels, Cafes, Diners, Stores, operating or abandoned.
• Old signs. ...NOT new signs or roadsigns, unless it's something funny or strange.
• Roadside weirdness or kitsch, including vintage roadside attractions and tourist traps.
• Some scenery shots are OK, but we don't want to become a "flowers & sunsets" kinda group.

• Ephemera (postcards, pennants, etc) of vintage businesses or roadside attractions directly related to the Missouri roadside are also welcome. (Note: the "ephemera" angle is one we're trying on a temporary basis. We'll see how that goes. If not, it'll be back to "photos only".)

What we're not looking for:

• No "people shots". We're not really looking for your family or friends, we're looking for things we'd see along the road.

• No photos of your yard, your pets, or similar stuff. Again, we're looking for roadside shots, those photos of a traveler.

• No "urban grit" sort of stuff. While rural abandonment is fine here, there's other groups for Urbex, graffiti and other big city decay. "Big city" shots that fit the "what's OK" list are fine however. (Old motels, cafes, old signs, etc)

(Have we stressed enough that this group is for "roadside" and Missouri?)

If you're not sure if your photo(s) fit, bring them along. If they don't, we'll remove them, no hard feelings, ok?

NOTE: Please tag your photos with at least the city (or nearest city) and the road it was taken on. Folks might want to see what you photographed for themselves, so help them find it!

Please help us grow, especially now during our startup!

If you see photos you think should be in this group, simply cut-n-paste this into a comment box to invite the photo:

Please add this to the "<a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/roadside_missouri/">Roadside Missouri</a>" group.

Likewise, if you know people that don't have such photos, but would enjoy the topic, bring them along too. Let's have fun together! :-)
