Richmond Oval Fast Facts
• The Richmond Oval will be home to long track speed skating during the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
• For the Olympics, the Oval will house a 400-metre speed skating track and seat approximately 8,000. The Oval will be home to up to 12 medal events, with a potential 36 medals to be awarded.
• The Oval is being built by the City of Richmond, British Columbia, Canada, which will also own and operate the facility. The Richmond Oval project, which also includes a new waterfront plaza and park and a parkade, is budgeted for $178 million (Canadian).
• Post-Games, the Oval will become an international centre of excellence for sports and wellness. The Oval's flexible design will allow it to be used for a wide variety of different sport and community uses.
• In typical use, the Oval's main activity floor will have three primary activity areas offering ice, hardwood and indoor turf playing surfaces. This will offer a full range of training and competitive opportunities for both summer and winter sports, ranging from developmental and recreational to elite level sport.
• A complete range of sports medicine and wellness services and activity areas, including a major fitness centre will also be housed in the Oval, along with retail and food services.
• The Richmond Oval is located on 32 acres of City-owned land along the banks of the Fraser River, just minutes from Vancouver International Airport.
• The Oval will be centrepiece of a major new urban waterfront neighbourhood featuring a mix of residential, commercial and public amenity development. The new Oval neighbourhood will be an international destination and meeting place offering diverse indoor and outdoor recreational activities, shopping and services.
• The Oval is now under construction. Site densification is complete, site compaction will continue until spring, 2006. Building construction will begin in May, 2006. The Richmond Oval is scheduled to open in fall, 2008.
• The Government of Canada and Province of BC have contributed a total of $60 million toward the capital cost of the Oval. In addition, the Oval, will qualify for ongoing funding from a $110 million Legacy Trust to offset operating costs.
• The official opening ceremony of the Oval was held on Dec. 12, 2008 5:00 PM -6:00 PM
