Richard Janes Artist Statement
Concepts
The core concept behind my work is an investigation into different aspects of nature and mans\' influence on it. Implicit in the work I make is a desire to reflect the environment around the sculpture. This is sometimes achieved through simple representational imagery or through more subtle use of form. My work is dealing with ideas around creating intimate spaces. This has taken the form of shelters and seating. I am developing this work, the sculptures created remain intimate but suggest a more internal space within the form, a place to discover and look into rather than physically inhabit. The seats I make remain vessels for the human form influencing the way in which people view their immediate environment through form and position.
Influences
Classical architecture, totemic imagery, nature, history.
