Trying to keep it natural...

Hi

I'm new to the group and was looking for peoples opinions on how to keep a portrait retouch looking natural.

I see alot of retouches that go to town with softening the skin and removing every single blemish etc. Alot of the time it works (or atleast I think it does) because of the subject matter i.e. fashion photography, celebrities and so on.

But when it comes to "normal" people whats the best way to keep the person looking natural?

I have the opinion that the best way is to leave in some of the "flaws". However I'm always afraid that doing that could be seen or interpreted as a poor retouch.

Am interested in how others tackle this issue.

Hi . Welcome to the group.
When it comes to portrait retouches everyone has a different opinion.
Its not like exposure - where its easy to get a good consensus as to if a photo is underexposed.
I usually just edit to please myself and most people will usually like it too. Personally i like the more natural look, where the natural texture of the skin comes through.
I have a good subtle skin softening action if you want it (CS3 & later),
just FlickrMail me your email address and i'll send it to you.

if you dont want to do much to the skin, then just use the spot healing tool and cloning tool. wont lose any texture using that.
