About Rescued by Post Production

Rescued by Post Production. Get yours at bighugelabs.com/flickr

Many pictures we take are often dismissed as not usable for all sorts of reasons – they may be poorly exposed or the cropping might be totally wrong for example. In other words, they are not in a state that we would like to show them to other people. We don't want to embarrass ourselves and share them on Flickr!

That's where post-production comes in.

We might use computer software to manipulate a picture until it becomes acceptable or – as we always hope – exceptional. You could use consumer-orientated software such as Apple's iPhoto or Google's Picasa. You might use high-level software such as Adobe Photoshop. Or something in between. You could use anything in fact.

We might like using film and process the images ourselves. Something we do in the darkroom makes a dramatic improvement to the picture. A change of contrast or cropping for example can make a big difference to a picture.

This Rescued by Post Production group aims to show off our post-production skills. Post any picture that you have improved by any process that you have done after the picture was taken. The word here is improved. Although this could be a subjective decision what we are really looking for are pictures showcasing rescue jobs. This way we could learn from each other how to best use our digital toolboxes to save photos that might once have been cast off. As Scott Ableman, who originated the idea, has suggested "What I did not envision [in suggesting the Rescued by Post Production thread in The World Through My Eyes group] was the taking of a perfectly fine photo and turning it into a psychedelic statement of digital abstract art."

Some Rules:

1.  Post the improved picture in the main pool.
2.  Place a small sized version of the un-processed picture in the comments of the improved picture.
3.  In the description of the improved picture tell us how you did what you did. Describe the process and any tools you used to achieve that change.
4.  Images in the pool that do not have items 2 and 3 included will be deleted.

Some Guidance:

To include a small version of the original picture we suggest that you upload it to Flickr but make the picture Private – doing this ensures that your contacts don't think that is your best work!

You might want to have more than one tab or window open in your Browser to help with the following process.

1.  When the original picture has been uploaded, open it and click the small All Sizes button just above the picture.
2.  Click the Small size link.
3.  Copy the HTML text in section 1.
4.  Open a new tab or window and go to your improved picture.
5.  Paste the copied HTML text into a new comment.

Don't forget to add the description required.
