This a group to mark the passing of the BMMO/Midland Red/Midland Fox/Arriva Midlands Southgates Garage, Leicester - which was recently demolished (2011).
Southgates was the first proper depot that BMMO built in the Leicestershire area, opening on the 21st July 1927. This, following use of premises at Frog Island and Welford Road after BMMO's first foray into Leicester from 1922.
Southgates became one of two depots in the city centre (the other being Sandacre Street next to SMBS) and the only one used continuously from its opening.
The frontage was used as a coach station for many years and by the late 1970's was then the terminus for the 1, 2 & 4 "Braunstone services". BMMO/Midland Red became Midland Red East in September 1981, then in January 1984 Midland Fox, by which time the former coach station had become a car park. By 1994 it had also become a storage area for the short-lived FoxCab operation.
During its long life a vast variety of buses have been based there. This group is there not only to record these, but also every aspect of the building and of course day to day life in the depot including the people and characters who worked there.
This group is there to stand as a living memory to what was "SS" Southgate Street... thank you so much for contributing to that!
John NELSON (Former Midland Fox employee)
