About Real Americans
Ever since the gaffs of the '08 presidential campaign, I've been noticing (any paying a bit more attention) to how people identify "American" and especially "Real America" or "Real Americans".
This group is to show/share portraits of actual real Americans, and to talk about what that means. I hope that this group will develop to demonstrate the real diversity of the American population and help people re-examine their assumptions about who/where is the real America(n).
Here are the requirements for posting to this group:
1. The photo is a portrait of a American citizen or citizens. (You can check out this article.)
2. The subject of the portrait has agreed to be presented as a "real American".
3. The portrait must be accompanied by (in the caption or comments) a statement or story from/by the subject about at least one of:
a. What it means to them to be an American;
b. A story about a time when their American-ness was questioned; or
c. A heritage story about how they came to be American.
(The statement or story can be written up by either the subject or whoever, but the original source must be the subject of the portrait.)
