UPDATE: Re-ment Photography - What Camera? What Lenses?

view profile

Ayîk/Petit Tricotage  Pro User  says:

Hey, Gang!

UPDATE:
I realized that I was overlooking a huge pool of photographic knowledge by limiting this thread to dslr's and lenses. Please let us know what camera (of any type!) and/or lenses you are using for your Re-ment photos.

I won't name names but we all know that there are those of you out there who are posting gorgeous shots that we not taken on a dslr.

I am still particularly interested in macro/micro lenses but I want everyone to feel included and be able to find this to be a useful thread.

I am currently using a Canon EF-S 18-55mm lens.
(But also the macro setting on a Canon PowerShot SX100 IS, which is not a dslr.)

Thanks!

Hiii :D
I'm so glad this question was raised.
I'm looking for the right lens too! I want one that will get reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally close to the subject.
THIS ONE gets about 3cm close to the subject (and focus's) and I think I'm buying this one this week :D

Best wishes

I'm not sure where you read that lens could get 3cm to the subject -- it actually has a focusing distance of 18.9cm per the specs. That's still pretty good - but not 3cm.

I'm no expert on choosing lenses, plus it's a very personal decision in the end. But there are a few things may want to consider:

Close (Minimum) Focusing Distance - as mentioned above, that's how close you can get to your subject before the camera is no longer able to focus. Typically, the longer your lens (50mm vs. 300mm), the farther away you'll need to be. But you also need to consider what else you might want to shoot with the lens - Re-Ment holds still, and you can get as close as you want. But if you'd also like to shoot butterflies with your lens, you'd spook them before you got close enough to use a 50mm macro. In that case, a 100mm or 135mm (or even 180mm) would be better. You could still use that for your Re-Ment, but you'd stand back a little farther to do so. Personally, I opted for the Canon 100mm Macro when I made my choice.

One thing about this - I've not looked this up or tested it to be sure, but I believe the focusing distance is measured from the camera itself (where your sensor is), NOT from the tip of the lens. If your focusing distance is 12" and your lens is 5" long, then you can put the front of the lens 7" from your subject.

Another thing to consider is the Magnification Ratio.... a lot of lenses tack the word "macro" on them, but don't offer a true 1:1 ratio. This one, for instance, calls itself a macro zoom but only has a zoom ratio of 1:2. Look for a lens that offers true 1:1 magnification, if you're going to invest in macro.

The last thing to consider, and this is true for ANY lens, not just macro, is the aperture. The lens I linked to in the example above only goes down to f4.0 at the widest aperture, and that's not enough to give you the shallow depth of field you want in a miniature macro. It says "f4.0-5.6", which means that at 70mm you can use f4.0, but as you zoom out to the full 300mm, you'll be limited to f5.6. By contrast, the lens that linked to (which is an excellent choice, IMO!), offers f2.8, which will give you a beautiful DoF and blur.

Thank you, Renatta!
I was cobbling together a terrible response to Refeti that was full of guesses (I have been doing some research). You response has confirmed or corrected so many of my guesses!

I am still very curious to learn what others here are using.

Cheap camera solution:

My first point & shoot ~ Stolen
Second P&S ~ Good video, not so good pictures (gave to 12-yr-old)
Third P&S ~ Factory defect. Returned & money spent on Re-Ment.

Griped & Grumbled ~ Sister loaned me a very nice Canon SX 100 IS.
(If I break it, I will owe her my life). Nice pictures, not too complicated to use, and a reasonable price. Works great on a tripod, too.

Next step ~ Save money & buy a good digital camera w/changeable lens.
I LOVE my old 35mm dinosaur, but printing & developing film is too expensive, when I have to take 30 pics to get a single good one.

Note: Your pictures are not bad at all....unless it's one of a boil...uh, nevermind.

Uyek~ LOL I don't think the boil will have an adapter to match your camera. :)

Phyzzle~ You are brilliant. My father has an old Sony S45 or something and even though it is fairly old, it takes great pictures. He says he'll loan it to me until his next trip. Yay me!

I love my old Cannon film camera too. I have many lenses and filters and everything. I wish there was some way to attatch a memory card to it, lol.

I use a point & cick (Canon PowerShot SD1300 IS) so all this lens talk goes completely over my head, but I would love a camera that I can really get close with.

CarolineSwing, I was just reading about how you can use film lenses on digital cameras! Let me try and (re)find the link. It's a bit complicated but still cheaper than buying the dslr lens equivalents.

My point and shoot is a great option, if you are looking for a non-dslr. I have opted for its macro setting rather than use my macro-less dslr. You can practically touch the Re-ment with it. In fact, I have knocked over a few set ups with it that way!

Caroline, I found the "old lenses on dslr stuff" I was reading ...

Photojojo's "How To."

Wired has a great article that flags how manual focusing can be trickier.

I am really interested in this and have started one of my running lists on my blog (each time I learn something or find something new, I will add to it).

I'm using a Canon Powershot SD870 IS right now, but I'm looking for a new camera too. At the moment, I've got my eye on a Sony NEX-5 that's not quite a DSLR but can use different lenses. This thread's been really helpful!

Interesting!
Not a dslr but lens-changeable? Now that's cool!
I am going to google it ... thanks for sharing it here.
