About Rate & Critique: Amateur Photography [ Score 5 - Post 1]
The word amateur, from French, means "lover of." An amateur is someone who follows a pursuit because they have a passion for doing it. The amateur photographer is often in a position to be more creative than someone doing paid work that requires following specific guidelines.

From the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/ratemyamateurphotography/"><b>Rate & Critique: Amateur Photography 5:1 </b> </a> group, I score this photo: __ / 100.
===Official Rating Code===copy and paste all above this line =====
- If you don't use the above code above, you aren't rating photos in this group.
- Critique Etiquette
- Rate before you submit. That way, if you are unexpectedly called away from the computer, you won't be in the position of being a non-rater, and you won't be a burden on the staff who will then remove your photo, and you won't possibly have your membership revoked, etc.
- The scores will be out of one hundred.
- On each photo you score, include at least one thing you like, and make at least one
suggestion for improvement. If you do not, you may be subject to intense scrutiny and hounding from any and all members of the group.
IF SOMEONE DOESN'T RATE "Did Not Rate" (dnc) Icon
If you observe a photographer that submitted a photo without rating any others, place the following code on their photo.
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/ratemyamateurphotography/"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7205/6901021165_51cd4b32fc_o.png" width="118" height="118" alt="flickr RCAmatP dnr"></a>
It will look like this:

If You See This Icon on Someone's Photo
- Don't rate that photo. Skip it and continue rating as if it didn't exist.
- You may place another one of these did-not-rate icons on it if you find that they still did not meet their rating obligation. You may additionally comment why you are not rating that photo.
- You are forever relieved of the obligation to rate that photo.
If You Get This Icon On Your Photo
Immediately fulfill your rating obligation, then contact the person who placed the icon on your photo, and an admin, via flickrmail. Advise them you rated, and request them to verify and remove the dnr icon. Removal of that icon without rating will likely get you banned. Your rights to request make-up ratings or use the Missing Rating Thread for that photo are forfeit. You may remove and resubmit the photo after it reaches Page 2 per the standard rules.
PROMOTIONAL PLATITUDES
- Are you tired of hearing: not enough color; too saturated; not sharp enough; too much contrast; too grainy; too dark, etc.? What do you want to hear?
- Are you looking for honest criticism? Have you been deceived in the past?
- Do you ever think:, "What the bloody hell?
- Does it rain alot where you live?
- Do you sometimes dream in black and white?
- If any of these things ring a bell: submit your photo here for five ratings. Rate the first five photos in the pool first, using the following Official Rating Code:
- Do not take photos. Make photos.
- This group is about encouraging and making constructive criticisms. It's not necessarily about keeping a stiff upper lip.
- The impact of a photo is how it makes you feel. It can be weak or strong. It doesn't make sense to describe it as good or bad.
- Are you a beginner unsatisfied with your photos? Don't worry, it gets better. In the days of film it was said: "Your first 10,000 photos are generally your worst." In the digital era, make that about 100,000.
- If you don't invest the time required to provide comments that are specific, well thought out, and helpful, you might be considered insensitive, and are possibly obtuse. At best, you might be thought of as not too bright.
- Feel free to post: digital, film, or Polaroids. (If you can figure out how to post film or Polaroids do so without converting them to digital form.)
- It has been said that Rate & Comment: Amateur Photography is a group where you can post your photos and receive feedback in the form of suggestions.
- If you comment "Nice shot" or anything else with only two words, you are a tool.
- If you say a photo is nice, good, or awesome etc., you are not being specific. It is better is to say why the photo is such a way or what makes it that way. The former will make you seem pleasant--but not necessarily sincere, particularly caring, or very good at critique. The latter will make you appear to be thoughtful, attentive, and well educated.
- Push harder.
- When it's foggy, all your photos will be grayer. Gray is a colour. What are the implications of that?
- When critiquing anything, it is good etiquette to mention at least one thing done well before discussing anything that can be improved.
- Do not take photos. Be taken by photos.
- Invite all your contacts, particularly those from the UK, to join this group.
- Critique the photo, not the photographer.
- Is there such a thing as bad fish and chips?
- Overcoming personal biases is probably the hardest obstacle to giving a good critique.
- Be patient with yourself as you learn to critique effectively; and with others as they learn also.
NOTICE: If your photo is found in the pool before you've scored the five before yours, it is subject to immediate removal, along with your membership. No questions asked. No further reminders or warnings. There is a never-ending deluge of people who purposely submit to score groups with no intention of scoring others. Whether the volunteer staff chooses to invest their time nor energy to differentiate the inadvertent non-rater from the outright intentional deadbeat will be determined by them on a case-by-case basis; depending as much on their own inclinations as anything else. Note the rules of the group purposely specify your scores are required before you submit. This obviates all excuses for not scoring. If your photo or membership is removed and you are a responsible person who has simply made a mistake; just fulfill your obligation per Rule 4 and carry on.
