About RAC Future Car Challenge
Photos and videos from any year relating to the RAC Future Car Challenge - especially of the cars and the technologies used.
The first event took place in 2010, and each year has taken place on the same weekend as - and complements - the more traditional Veteran Car Rally. The event is organised and promoted by motion works.
Vehicles compete to follow the route of the LBVCR (London to Brighton Veteran Car Rally) [flickr group link] but using the reverse direction - starting from Brighton and finishing in London. The aim is minimise energy consumption in "real world" driving conditions.
The event is intended to showcase clean, low or zero carbon and more energy efficient motoring technologies.
The categories of vehicle that participate include:
★ EV - Electric Vehicle
★ HEV - Hybrid Electric Vehicles
★ PHEV - Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles
★ E-REV - Extended Range Electric Vehicles
★ HFEV - Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Electric Vehicles
★ ICE - Internal Combustion Engine - very efficient petrol [gas] or diesel engine powered Vehicles
In 2011 the lowest energy consumption for the approximately 54 miles / 87 kilometre route - expressed in terms of kilowatt-hours [kWh] was recorded as 7.0 kWh by entry number 27, the Gordon Murray Design T.27 Electric Vehicle. [1 kWh = 3.6 megajoules]
This is an unofficial "just for fun" group. For information, a link to the official (futurecarchallenge.com) website is appended at the end of this description. The official website also has a gallery.
