Locations thread suggestions
|
Ok, I can't think of anything else (It's way to early), any suggestions for local locations, I'm quite sure I'm missing some obvious ones. I think we're mostly looking for places that lots of people take pictures of.
Oh, and is anyone else having flickr issues lately? The last few days the little gray arrows next to the links at the top of the pages (you, organize, contacts, groups) aren't working. I can't get the "all sizes" button to work either unless I open it in a new window, and I can't edit my image title or description, I wasn't sure if it was just me (my internet connection has sucked lately) or if anyone else has had issues.

No problems here.
My uncle has been a pro for many years. We were discussing a lot of things the other day because I was showing him my studio shots, and he said the hardest thing about shooting around here is that you don't see things the way outsiders do. He says the best way to find locations is find people who aren't from here, like college students. We overlook so many places. You get caught up in landmarks like the Sky Bridge, Figge, Vanderveer, etc... And miss the little things. Take a drive, and look at your surroundings as an outsider. I need to do that myself.

Darn, that's what I was afraid of, stupid internet. Weird.
@ Darkfiregt, I'm totally with you, definitely get out and take pictures off the beaten track, find things that everyone else misses. I think I've had a discussion with a few of you about the overshot bridge. Although the first year I was into this, that's what I took pictures of.
The reason I'm posting these is that for one, almost everyone in the group has images of these places, and so we can get more participation, and I like going through and seeing that even though we've all got shots of these things, a lot of the images are different. It's kind of cool to see how different phototgraphers look at the same thing and see something different.
Plus it's a quad-cities group we should have the most kick-ass pictures of these things. :)

Of course. I don't mind the threads at all. I need to get my head outta my butt too and look around to find some sweet locations. Of course, I hate the cold weather, so you rarely find outdoor photos of mine. But, I just got let go from my day job, so who knows.

How about the National Cemetery? Or maybe a cornfield photo thread? Or The Mark/i Wireless Center?

The Davenport cathedral? Or, for that matter, any of the dozens of attractive churches in the area.
There's a number of attractive parks around besides Vander Veer. Up-river, Illinwick is quite nice. Down-river there's Loud Thunder. Depending on how far away you consider to be Quad Cities, Scott County Park by Park View is decent. Westbrook Park in De Witt used to be quite nice, but they screwed it up when they replaced the foodpaths with pavement. Farther north is Maquoqueta Caves, which would make a great get-together location if we decide to include it in the QCA.
From an urban standpoint, downtown Davenport and Rock Island both have quite a bit to offer if you like alleys, brick facades, dumpsters, and rusting fire escapes. The Augie campus is quite nice, as well.

Perhaps "Nightlife"? Anything taken at night or twilight: sunsets, bars, neon lights, light trails, etc.

I've been curious about the Nahant Marsh for quite awhile now, but I haven't been there myself. It looks great for nature/wildlife photography--something I'm interested in, but have very little experience with. In these frigid temperatures, I'm not exactly in a rush to check it out. However, I plan to visit when it warms up a little. Here are a few links if anyone's interested:

I also came by a list of locations on the QC Photo Club website, but aside from the Maquoketa Caves that fracman mentioned, nothing really jumped out at me. Maybe I'm missing something though. The other problem is that it probably won't have many interesting suggestions that outsiders might be able to provide, but here it is:

While it is a bit far away to be considered "Quad Cities", the Mississippi Palisades Park is a very nice place. The Fulton Windmill is OK, but once you've seen it, you've seen it.
If Savanna is close enough, then how about Pella, IA and their annual Tulip Festival?
