About QR National

QR National is the rail freight division of Queensland Rail, the QLD government's rail business. In the middle of 2010, the QLD government seperated Queensland Rail (the passenger business) from QR National (the freight business) in preparation to privatise QR National later in 2010.

QR's emergence into the national rail freight market started with the purchase of Northern Rivers Railway to form Interail and QR took over the Yennora freight yard in western Sydney to form it's NSW operating base. QR also purchased CRT (Colin Rees Transport), and owns the former Westrail (WA government) rail freight operation in Western Australia which was part of the ARG consortium from the year 2000 and was owned jointly by QR, Genesee and Wyoming with Wesfarmers until the consortium was dissolved and QR became the sole owner of the WA part of the business in 2006.

ARG did also operate in NSW for a time, holding the Manildra contract after acquiring the ATN Access business (which was utilising former Westrail L class diesels). ARG lost the contract to Pacific National around late 2008.

QRN also has a substantial presence in the Hunter Valley coal scene aside from it's position in the east coast intermodal transport market and currently operates more than 10 unit trains servicing multiple mine sites, some with full-time exclusive contracts and some with ad-hoc 'spot' working if/when required.

If you have any pictures of QR National's locos, trains or other aspects of the company's operations, feel free to contribute them to this group.
