Qatar Emiri Air Force, a brief history

Its ties with Great Britain and France are clearly reflected in the Qatar Emiri Air Force that was formed in 1974. Operating mainly British and French equipment. The first jet aircraft to enter QEAF service was the Hunter of which four were delivered. The UK also delivered Westland built Commando, Whirlwind and Lynx Helicopters while France provided Qatar with AMD Alpha Jets and Sud Aviation SA342 Gazelles. These were, in 1983, supplemented by AMD built Mirage F-1s that were subsequently transferred to Spain after the arrival of the first of twelve Mirage 2000-5s in 1997. These Mirage 2000s now form the fighter-backbone of the QEAF.

Four Lockheed C-130J-30 Super Hercules have been ordered at a total value of $393 million
In July 2008, Qatar’s Emiri Air Force signed a EUR 260 million (currently about $400 million) contract with AgustaWestland for 18 AW139 medium twin helicopters (formerly the AB139, until the Bell partnership dissolved in 2005).[8] The helicopters will be used for utility tasks, troop transport, search and rescue, border patrol, special forces operations, law enforcement and homeland security.

Mirage 2000

In 1994, Qatar ordered nine single-seat Mirage 2000-5EDAs and three Mirage 2000-5DDA trainers, with initial deliveries starting in 1997.

Boeing C-17 Transport

The Qatar Emiri Air Force operates two Boeing C-17s. Boeing delivered Qatar's first C-17 on 11 August 2009 and the second on 10 September 2009.

Westland Commando

The QEAF has a total of 12 Commando's made up of Mk2 and Mk3 variants. The Mk2's are operated by the 9th Multirole Squadron and the Mk3's are operated by the 8th Anti Surface Vessel Squadron.

Hawker Hunter FGA.78 QA11 - located at Doha International Airport. This aircraft was damaged in the 1970's but remains at the airport in Doha derelict.
