This is perfect. My puppy wakes me between 4 and 5:30 every morning. Normally, I convince her (read: put her in her crate) to sleep for another 30 minutes. Tomorrow, I'll get up and take some photos when I walk her! *grins*

We have no sunrises in the city -- at least that we can see. I posted two pictures of where the sunrise should have been -- using different settings on my little point and shoot camera.

HI all!! :)
Well..I didn't plan on getting up.. but just so happens i was wide awake at 4:47 this morning..and tried as I may..I couldn't get back to sleep!
So at 5:11..i jumped outta bed..ran down to my 'puter and checked what time the sun was gonna be rising.. "6:11 sunrise"..
Ohhhh I have Time!!! :)
So i slipped into my jeans and threw on a shirt..and a baseball cap..grabbed a coffee to go and off I went!
(i think hubby's last mumble was ..'you're gonna do what???" )lol
The spot I picked wasn't at all good.. too many telephone poles..and wires..and construction going on..so Im gonna have to go scouting around for a great sunrise area for next time.
But then i drove around..and found horses..and cattle..and flowers..and it felt so fun to go 'exploring' alone..and to be wandering around before most folk were awake!
THanks for the challenge..this was fun..and I can't wait to see everyone's pics :)
GOOOOD MORNING !!!
hugs..

I will try tomorrow at 6:06 for 'civil twilight'. I had no idea there were 3 different types of twilight. Since I never arise before 10am why would I know. Here are the definitions if anyone really cares anyway :)
Civil Twilight
Civil twilight is defined when the sun is 6 degrees below the horizon. This is the limit at which twilight illumination is sufficient, under good weather conditions, for terrestrial objects to be clearly distinguished; at the beginning of morning civil twilight, or end of evening civil twilight, the horizon is clearly defined and the brightest stars are visible under good atmospheric conditions in the absence of moonlight or other illumination. In the morning before the beginning of civil twilight and in the evening after the end of civil twilight, artificial illumination is normally required to carry on ordinary outdoor activities.
Nautical Twilight
Nautical twilight is defined when the sun is 12 degrees below the horizon. At the beginning or end of nautical twilight, under good atmospheric conditions and in the absence of other illumination, general outlines of ground objects may be distinguishable, but detailed outdoor operations are not possible, and the horizon is indistinct.
Astronomical Twilight
Astronomical twilight is defined when the sun is 18 degrees below the horizon. Before the beginning of astronomical twilight in the morning and after the end of astronomical twilight in the evening the sun does not contribute to sky illumination; for a considerable interval after the beginning of morning twilight and before the end of evening twilight, sky illumination is so faint that it is practically imperceptible

I just happened to have taken these shots a few mornings ago. However; I didn't have to get up early to get them. My crew is on duty for night-ops and I usually get to head off to my room by 0700. Unless of course, we have a mission to redirect our attention.
PW, I read your column religiously, as it makes me feel like I'm at home for a half hour a day. I love the recipes, but have nowhere to cook here. So I started a binder full of your recipes to try when ever it is I come home. I grew up in Southeast Oklahoma and now live in Ft Hood, Texas. Thank you P-Dub, you really do brighten my day.

I must hide my head in shame. Thank you Gallery32 for making me learn something today. I'm 44 and am REALLY REALLY close to calling my father and admiting he was right about me 'learning something everyday'.... I hate making that call. My kids on the other hand ignore me completely every time I call home. (Is it wrong to be kinda-sorta glad about that?)

Yes they are samwould. But the irony is that think they are cool because of some of the things I've bought them. Take the iphone for example. What was I thinking overpaying for a gadget that would 'nudge' them into a phone call with "cool dad"....
I can't wait to go home for R & R.... the look on their bright shining faces when they call they friends and hear that annoying little sound right before the message: "We're sorry, but your phone is temporarily out of service. To reactivate your service, please contact your loving father"......
kee hee I kill me.

My body has a hard time letting me get out of bed early... being a new mommy of 2, when the kids sleep... I sleep! This assignment will force me to get up and out of bed before 8 am (ahhhh the early morning sun *hisssss*) ... maybe I should start exercising while I'm already getting up so early!? Hmmmm... definitely something to think about!

I think MommyBree should get at least kudo points if she just completes this assignment. Just be careful not to get spit-up on the lens.
Hey, wouldn't baby hair be a neat subject for the sun shining in from behind. I mean it's all soft and fine when they're young. But I guess we'd have to catch them asleep in order to keep 'em still long enuff.

Thanks irighti! There was a brief stint of early evening sunshine so I took advantage of it. I know it's not a morning shot, and I guess technically skirting the guidelines a bit, however, I think the effect of backlighting comes through.
And you SHOULD eat your Wheaties :)

OK I've gotten up early two days in a row ...and this is all I could come up with. Too many houses to get good nature shots. But I was thrilled to be able to capture one of the goldfinches who've been eating up my sunflowers. Naturally it was the last of the 40 or so shots I took this morning.

I got up late today, but last year I took some spectacular pictures as the sun rose while we camped on a houseboat in Iceberg Canyon at lake powell..I just added them...I especially love the way the shadows, light and reflections play off each other. And the water was so glassy and smooth, it almost looks fake. These are SOOC Shots...

Thanks!
It was a BLAST...we normally do it every year, but this year the money just wasn't there....It's great though! We live on the Houseboat for a week solid, sleeping on the roof of the houseboat under the stars....that's the only reason I was awake at the crack of dawn...the sun gets bright and hot quite fast!
Iceberg canyon is especially beautiful...the sheer rock cliffs go straight up on all sides of you....as you can see in the photos. I took those while sitting in a chair out on the back of the houseboat. Even I was amazed! I'd only had the camera (Canon s3IS) for a month...I think that shot was just on "auto"...I am not even close to being proficient in anyway with a camera, but go to my blog punkrebelmama.blogspot.com and you'll see my camping trip last weekend...I got hummingbirds in action!

Wow... getting up early is refreshing! I think I am going to do that more often (I'll just have to take an afternoon nap with the kids). My photos were taken only a few minutes from my house. I got to the field at 6:15 am and sat around (took some pictures too) until the sun came up just after 7 am. Just to let everyone know - it sucks to get wheat stuck in your clothes - that stuff is POKEY!

Sorry I haven't been around for a couple days. Internet gets shut down until the next of kin is reached.
Mommybree, there's always a good reason to wake mommy up at 0100 hours when your almost one year old, they just forget what it is the second your eyes open. And their idea of good versus our idea of good, well, let's just say I was awakened at 3 one morning to be shown a championship boogar by a 4 year old. It just keeps getting better. Some day the cops will prolly be wakin me up about that time of morning....... huhhhhh

Hi, New to this group. This was fun even though things are dry as bone here. At first I thought "yeech" there's nothing worth photographing. Guess it's possible to find some loveliness even in the most common weeds just by bending down and studying them in the morning light. The owls reside here all of the time so they aren't hard to find once the sun rises. They were kind enough to hold still as long as I didn't get too close - that meant going into digital zoom but I'm happy I even got the shot. I'm learning so much from PW Photography!
