About Grufts

Crufts 2009 is about to kick off, but what was once a bit of wholesome family fun has been marred by controversy and concerns about potentially unhealthy inbreeding. The BBC has decided not to air the event this year.

To help fill the void, we have decided to hold our own virtual dog show for genuine canine lovers, and you are invited to take part.

Post a picture of the hound in your life - dogs only please, apologies cat fans - and add them to this group. It could be a picture of you and your pet together, a portrait of them on their own or perhaps an action shot.

In the description give us a a few words about why your pooch is the best, or tell us about an adventure you have been on together.

On Monday morning we will announce the shortlist of dogs vying for the Pup Idol title on guardian.co.uk. We will then open it up to a public vote, and the best in show will be announced in the afternoon.

Don't worry if your best friend isn't some pedigree chump: our judges will see your dog's inner beauty, and we're sure that readers will too.
