Asking Flickr to add public domain 'licensing'

view profile

Iwan Gabovitch  Pro User  says:

Has anyone of you written to flickr and asked them to allow public domain licensing? If not, why not do it now?

I got a reply saying "I have escalated your email to a senior representative in an effort to obtain the best answer." and got no reply since (3 weeks).

In case you wrote: do you have a copy of your wording? I did write but don't have the text, as it was not sent to me.

I've been a member of Flickr for a few years, but haven't put up any pictures because I want to waive all my copyright rights and place my photos into the public domain.

I finally broke down today and started posting pictures. Along with doing that, I wrote Flickr support the following:

It would be nice if you created an explicit "Public Domain" license choice for those of us who choose to put our workinto the public domain. Creative Commons makes a public domain dedication available already-- integrating that into your licensing choices would be very helpful.

I got back a reply directing me to the "Flickr Ideas" group. A quick search there reveals threads requesting a public domain option in the license / reserved rights selection going back into 2005.

There's a lot of whining in the threads about the legal murkiness associated with internationally waiving all rights to a work, and with the possibiltiy that people won't understand that what they're doing is irrevocable. The threads are pretty annoying to read, actually. People keep coming with using Creative Commons licenses as a "solution" (which it isn't), and questioning why someone would even want to put work in the public domain in the first place (which they have no business questioning). Talk about frustrating!

From what I can see, Flickr isn't going to change-- ever.

I'll just go on adding snarky comments in each and every image description, until I can get a privately hosted photo gallery up and running on a host that I own. Then I can make my own rules.

*sigh*

i would also love for there to be an official public domain choice. there is flickr commons. so institutions can choose it but individuals can't. glad to see this group exists, though. thanks for creating.

I agree. My lab, Minciu Sodas www.ms.lt is a member of the European Union thematic network for the Public Domain, COMMUNIA www.communia-project.eu I should raise this question through there. Thank you for setting up this group.

creative commons have now come up with the cc0 license to clarify the distinction between work that has moved into the public domain (typically images old enough to have fallen out of copyright) and work that you are actively dedicating to the public domain.

i'd love to see a cc0 option on flickr.

I would also love to dedicate my photographs to the public domain. I hope Flickr does something soon. I have dedicated some photographs (no, they aren't really worth seeing, lol) to public domain, but I posted them on my blog, instead of Flickr, and added a record of "Public Domain Dedication". That can also be embedded.
