Oops!!!Sorry guys...I'm mistaken posting...it's M/V Our Lady of Mediatrix and not Montserrat....

I'm very, very, sorry for my mistakes...

This will be a narrow topic. 7 ships and only one very short route. I suggest this be expanded to cover the old Tamula Shipping Line, the former service of Millenium Shipping and Tubod port which was served by Cebu Star of Maypalad. The topic could then be "Daima Shipping and Panguil Bay shipping" or simply "Panguil Bay shipping". Ports included will be Ozamis, Mukas, Tubod, Kolambugan, Silanga, Findlay Millar and maybe even Jimenez. Unfortunately only Mukas and Ozamis are active now. Do we include the Manila Cebu ships in Ozamis? Then the title could be "Ozamis and Panguil Bay shipping".

Dropped by Kolambugan port. No more trace of the ships. Dropped by Tubod port. None there too. And scouting Panguil Bay from Monte Alegre I can't see any. I wonder where they are now.
cr@ckers43 Posted 15 years ago
hehehe i rode the tamulas before in the early 90s between ozamis and tubod. they're very small ships. even smaller than cbu-bohol ships. one time during rough weather i thought we were not going to make it to tubod. the ship was being rocked like crazy by the big waves. it really scared the hell out of me. hehhehhe it was one of the best shipping experience i ever had!
admin
mbb8356 Posted 15 years ago
I came into the area mid-90s. There was no Daima yet, no Mukas port. The only ships crossing Panguil Bay were the small Tamula ferries on 2 routes: Ozamis-Kolambugan and Ozamis-Tubod and Millenium ship LCT Wilcox that connects Tubod and Silanga, Tangub City.

They say Tamula started in 1947 and was the pioneer. None of its ships was RORO but very cheap -- P12 upper deck and P8 lower deck. Since it runs farther out and the ships are small and it bobs its route was a dogleg.

When Daima started the Mukas-Ozamis route using double-ended ferries which are more comfortable and can take in vehicles and cross at half the time the Tamula ferries were doomed. And so is the LCT in Tubod. The vehicles including the buses shifted to Daima although for a time the Lillian buses patronized the new Millenium route parallel to the Daima route.

Now it is only Daima which makes the Panguil Bay crossing.
-BaDz- Posted 15 years ago
the last time i saw a Tamula ships was in Balingoan.most of their ships were transferred to Balingoan-Camiguin route but then again came the roro ships era so they're doomed to extinction.
admin
mbb8356 Posted 15 years ago
When Millenium lost out to Daima they closed their port and sold LCT Wilcox to Maayo Shipping. I visited Tubod port. Too lonely now esp since Cebu Star stopped sailing. Now just motor bancas connect Tubod to Silanga. No more open establishments in Tubod port when before there was a long line of vehicles there.

Ozamiz-Kolambugan v.v. route;
m/l Dona Antonina - 1 deck (pax accom)

Steel Hull Ships competes with Daima before they closed shops;

m/v Arthur - 2 decks with aircon accom
m/v Anita - 2 decks
m/l Manuel - 2 Decks

seas2fly Posted 15 years ago
As i remember also, there's another shipping company that served the Tubod-Ozamiz v.v route before the Tamulas, it was SUAZO SHIPPING CO. with their Flower-named wooded ships, all were single decker (pax cap. bet. 75-100pers), only 4 ang naalala ko, as follows;

m/l "DAHLIA'
m/l "SAMPAGUITA"
m/l "WALING-WALING'
m/l "GUMAMELA"

take note, it's martial law time when Tamula started calling Tubod, cant recall exact date, when Suazo goes bankrupt due to competition of motor bancas and Tamula survived until Daima came...
admin
mbb8356 Posted 15 years ago
These wooden ships don't have outriggers and are like motor launches? Were they called "lantsa"?
admin
mbb8356 Posted 15 years ago
Btw, what happened to the ships of Daima. The last time i saw them some were half-submerged too. Looked around last year when i passed Tubod and Kolambugan ports, no sign whatsoever.
seas2fly Posted 15 years ago
Yess! motor launch "lantsa" jud...

With regards to submerged ships here in panguil bay, only the t/s "NARDEL" is on that state... in Mukas port, 2 Daima's ships were ongoing repair at still and 4 ships are sailing...

I think you're talking about the Tamula's steel-hull ships which laid up near the Kolambugan pier, It's gone now sir... sayang... Afaik, the Tamulas cannot reach a one voice, "Know How" what to do to their idle assets particularly their ships, the problem, di magkasundo, hangang naubos na lang ng mga scavengers with the help of some unpaid employees...
admin
mbb8356 Posted 15 years ago
Sorry for the error. What i mean is the Tamula ships. Sayang nga. You know years before i was wondering why they wouldn't put it in some underserved routes like Liloan-Lipata, even just for carrying passengers. I remember off-season travel there some 10 years ago or when there is a ship out of commission that you would sometimes have to wait nearly 12 hours and we passengers were hoping somehow even a small ferry that can carry pax is welcome just to bridge the long hours between the regular ferries. That is also true in Allen-Matnog some 10 years ago. Or even a Bogo route to some town in Masbate. They could have even sold the ships to some Zamboanga operators, I guess. Sayang.
seas2fly Posted 15 years ago
You are right sir...
Actually, that was their plan to sold all ships so that they can also pay their finacial obligations including their employees, but, it did not happen... Especially those latest acquired ship, it's nice ship, with modern accommodation and speed, comparing to some short-distance-ferry in the country, i think those ships it's much better... sayang lang talaga...

Broken Up: Ozamiz port - 3 steel-hull and 3 wooden ships,
Kolambugan port - 3 steel-hull and 2 wooden ships
and the others as what i heard was broken up in Tagoloan, Mis.Or.

I wonder how true is this. From Wikipedia:

"The PANGUIL BAY BRIDGE or the BRIDGE OF PEACE will connect Misamis Occidental and Lanao del Norte provinces. The bridge will cut short the travel time between the two provinces. At present, the Daima shipping lines connect the two provinces using their Roll on Roll off vessels crossing Panguil Bay. The construction of the bridge is considered by NEDA as one of the three big ticket infra projects for Region 10 based on its 2008 State of the Region report. Geophysical survey and geotechnical investigation on its site is on going and the construction will commence in 2010 as reported by Regional Development Council chairman Gov. Jesus Romualdo on May 26, 2009."
goriob2010 Posted 15 years ago
I have been told of that plan to build a bridge that will connect Ozamis to Lanao when I used to go there in 1999. I wonder where the bridge would start and end and I imagine that is a long bridge.
goriob2010 Posted 15 years ago Edited by goriob2010 (member) 15 years ago
I was a regular traveler in this area in 1999 and was regular costumer of Daima and Millenium Shipping.
I was a regular on the M/V Our Lady of Mediatrix and rode on her a month before that bombing incident..

But what I regret most was not taking photos of the RoRos rode then..

I even rode on one of the Cebu ferries that sails from Cebu to Ozamis (but I forgot her name). In fact this was my first trip to Ozamis then.

How I wish I could have taken photos then.
And to think I had a roll film camera with me to document my inspections. Libre naman ang pa-develop...

astiguys Posted 15 years ago
Sir Mike:

yes it's true sir. it was already planned by the government of misamis occidental & DPWH in year 2008 to build a bridge connecting the 2 provinces, Misamis Occidental & Lanao del Norte. the bridge will construct in Tangub & Tubod & also connecting the Ozamiz Coastal Road. supposedly the start of construction will be this year but now still not yet started. i wonder if this project will push through or not.
admin
mbb8356 Posted 15 years ago
I was wondering because before any construction funding has to be secured the size of which should easily land in the papers and all the pols would be basking in the hoopla and i have not noticed any. Considering the magnitude of the project should rival San Juanico bridge in length and would easily be the longest in Mindanao if i am not mistaken.

Panguil Bay Bridge Madayon na gyud
Thursday, December 9, 2010

Gani ang maong tulay ang maisip unya nga bridge of peace , bridge of friendship o kaha bridge of love.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

finally Panguil Bay Bridge will push through. i wonder what will be happend to daima if PBB is constructed & finished.

one of our fellow forumer in SSC says that Lite Shipping will enter Tubod-Silangga, Tangub City.
DCY_0 Posted 15 years ago Edited by DCY_0 (member) 15 years ago
That was the former route of the daima ferries before tubod - silangga.
admin
mbb8356 Posted 15 years ago
It was Millennium Shipping that was then plying the Tubod-Silanga route. That is the shortest RORO route i know. Less than 5 minutes travel time. There is still a motor banca plying that route.

Daima used Mukas port ever since. Outflanked Millennium also established their own port in Mukas but being farther and their ships slower and coming later they were not able to get a fair chunk of the rolling cargoes and their demise accelerated with the stoppage of the operations of Lilian Transit. After closing the route they sold of a few of their LCTs to Maayo Shipping.
DCY_0 Posted 15 years ago
Ahh thanks sir mike for the correction. I forgot millennium shipping hehe.

If lite will enter that route, hindi sila magtatagal. Diama is very known for the ozamiz - mukas route and the buses choose diama shipping. Even before the millennium shipping are still on the route, buses choose daima shipping.
FEEHILY O4 Posted 15 years ago
why not lite compete with maayo shipping here in negros oriental....they could use lite ferry 9 shes fast and comfortable enough then lcts of maayo.
admin
mbb8356 Posted 15 years ago
Most of the buses go to Ozamis and Dipolog and there is not much passengers in Tangub and the trip takes longer. I don't know if the situation changed already.

I guess that Panguil Bay bridge is a long way to go. I will believe it if the agreements are already signed. Until now i think it is just a proposal and nothing changed as there were lots of proposals before. And i wonder what happened to the German proposal to harness the power of the tides and incorporate a power generation plant alongside the bridge. I heard the German government was also willing to finance the bridge then but it needs a local counterpart (which is SOP) but it seems the Philippine government is not willing to shell out money. The reason i think why that proposal cannot get off the ground.

If it is PPP there will be a toll for sure coz the private entity's money has to earn. Will it be lower than the RORO charge?
maibadz Posted 15 years ago
sir mike Millenium was using the Tabigue port, some 2KM west of Mukas port.
admin
mbb8356 Posted 15 years ago
I was always in Ozamis, Pagadian, Maranding and Tubod during those years and i saw the construction of both ports and how the Millennium port lost out to the Daima port (for one their ferries take too long to depart besides being slower).

Constructing the Tabigue port caused Millennium to close the Tubod-Silanga route and suddenly the gaiety and business of Tubod port was gone (now even Maypalad is gone). When i passed there last year nary a soul was around except for the crew of the fishing boat and i was wondering where all the activity went. And sadly even Findlay Millar is gone. It was no longer the Tubod port i once knew.

Last Tuesday, I read a Manila Bulletin newspaper-that features Royal Seal 2 docked at Panguil Bay waters (not sure). It was also said that the Mukas (Kolambugan)-Ozamis City (not sure also) takes only 20 minutes-my question is this: Is this really correct?
astiguys-CEBU Posted 15 years ago Edited by astiguys-CEBU (member) 15 years ago
yes victory, it is correct. Mukas-Ozamiz will take only 15-30 minutes travel across the Panguil Bay except for Swallows which can take 30-40 minutes travel. the fastest RORO in daima before was the Royal Dolphin which can take only 15 minutes.

Guys, anyone knows what happen to LITE SHIPPING opening Silanga, Tangub City to Tubod, LDN which is supposed to start last Feb. 28 with their 2 LCT's... last week LS VP said, that their ship is under engine repair waiting for spare parts, somebody can confirm this... their trip schedule was from 4am up to 10pm to compete with DAIMA which is up to 9pm only... Tangub port as what PPA/DPWH said is now ready to commence said operation...
FEEHILY O4 Posted 14 years ago
i think its good for lite to put lf9 also there as its good for that route....
DCY_0 Posted 14 years ago
Daimah shipping lines first served the silanga, tangub to tubod ldn route....... But they transfer to ozamis - mukas route i think daimah transfer to ozamiz because ozamiz is the center of misamis occidental and the buses also choose diamah..... This is the reason why millineum shipping is now gone...... But good luck to lite shipping.............
admin
mbb8356 Posted 14 years ago
Since most of the traffic is going or coming from Ozamis then whoever is serving Silanga-Tubod should charge lower so that they will have a motive to run the extra kilometers needed to go to Tubod and Silanga. But their problem is Daima will always be able to match it and they will still lose (good the inutile LTFRB is not in charge of our ships; MARINA is at least better than them in that count coz it doesn't oppose lower fares like the traitorous LTFRB). Good luck indeed to Lite. Millennium bit the dust against Daima before.
DCY_0 Posted 14 years ago
I agree to sir mike...
FEEHILY O4 Posted 14 years ago
LITE CAN OFFER daima a much stronger challenge given there assets and experience in operating ships in large number of ares...
admin
mbb8356 Posted 14 years ago
Tubod-Silanga, Tangub distance is very near. It can be crossed in 5 minutes. But the problem of any operator there is the additional distance from Silanga to Ozamis and Mukas to Tubod is about 30 kms. That converts to about 8 liters of diesels for full-sized trucks and buses or about P300. So an operator in Tubod-Silanga should discount his fare for the biggies by about P300. Problem is if Daima brings their rate to P400-500 for the big ones then the Tubod-Silanga operator will almost have no maneuvering room. The situation is most vehicles come or is going to Ozamis and Iligan. But for vehicles going to Tagub or west of Tangub or going to Tubod or west of Tubod then the Tubod-Silanga route is perfect. Problem is this will not comprise 20% of the rolling cargo volume there and for buses it is 0%.

RE Tamula being the pioneer, the Brown Water Transport founded by the American Charles Brown served the route between Kolambogan and Ozamiz pre WWII. All the wooden lanchas in the Brown fleet were named after one of Mr. Brown's daughters named Rose: Rosita I, Rosita II, Rosita III, Rosita IV. Thenafter, the son-in-law took over and renamed the company after himself(!) as Tamula Shipping Lines=)

@seas2fly
The name of the Tubod-Ozamiz shipping company was "Suizo" =)

My professor in Filipino Class shared us about her experience in taking the Daima RORO ships "in dialect BARGE"here in Ozamiz & Mukas. My professor is from Kulambugan and she will taking barge everyday to our university. She told us about her bad experience. when she shared about Royal Dolphin, that time Royal Dolphin is very near in Ozamiz Port but when her(Royal Dolphin) steering wheel was broken, the captain can't turn properly so my professor told us that they came back to Mukas & take another barge again to Ozamiz. She really angry because she would be late in school. that was her worst experience in taking barge. but she really hate Swallow 2 bcoz Swallow 2 is too slow and they travel more than an half hour.

when she shared about the Royal Dolphin incident I know already that the cause of being dock in Mukas is her Steering Wheel which is it was broken while sailing.
Jeth! Posted 14 years ago

With regards to the Port Statistic of Ozamiz & Mukas which are the Top 1 & 2 of the
2008 RANK OF PORTS ACCORDING TO VEHICLES HANDLED (Departures and Arrivals), I observed that those port are really busy everyday. Time to time full of vehicles & passengers onboard Daima Ferries. 3 or 4 RORO ferries are sailing across the panguil bay and to think that this is not enough. Fall in Line of vehicles of those port are too long & waiting. I just hope that Lite will come back to Silanga & Tubod.

MOD
Markram Budz Posted 14 years ago
The Millennium Port in Mukas is now occupied by the fishermen just like in Silanga port sir.
admin
mbb8356 Posted 14 years ago
I don't think Tubod-Silanga is competitive. Lite will have a better chance if they take over the Millennium port in Mukas, use a faster ferry and compete with Daima. Or sail from Tubod to Ozamis perhaps. But the RORO must be fast enough to compete with the Mukas transit time.
mightyboiz-OZC11 Posted 14 years ago
Its also good for Lite to compete w/ daima but the problem is lack of space for their docking area in Ozamiz Port. The RORO docking area near in the terminal is occupied by Daima Ferries & the 2nd Port of Ozamiz which is the docking port of Millennium Lines before is already connected the Ozamiz Coastal Road Project. so the only option is in Silanga Port.

It's true. The queue sometimes reach outside the port gates. That happened when Daima was just using 3 ferries. It should be at least 4. That's the problem with no competition. Gone were the days there's near certainty you will be aboard the next ferry at the latest. The hawkers just have a field day here.
jhayz_08 Posted 14 years ago
And on this long queue, sometimes, vehicles of politicians gets the priority...at most, even without the politician present during the trip. Me, i experienced this too, but i'm on a government vehicle, we usually get prioritized esp. on official business.

since the thread is quit inactive sometimes. i just change the title from Daima Shipping Lines & Panguil Bay Shipping to NORTHMIN & Panguil Bay Shipping so that we can also have an idea the movements in Misamis Oriental & Camuigin Ships not only just in Panguil Bay.
admin
mbb8356 Posted 14 years ago
But north Mindanao shipping and Camiguin shipping has no relation with Panguil Bay shipping. The only relation is see is Tamula Shipping also operated in Camiguin but Tamula is now dead. And sometimes Panguil ships go to PICMW for drydocking.

What this thread should include is shipping in Oroquieta and Plaridel. Panguil Bay shipping is even more related to Dapitan shipping than north Mindanao shipping.
admin
mbb8356 Posted 14 years ago
The more proper title of this thread is "Panguil Bay and Iligan Bay Shipping" because technically Jimenez, Oroquieta and Plaridel ports are not in Panguil Bay but in Iligan Bay. If Iligan Bay is included in the topic then there is no problem covering up to that area. Anyway shipping in Lanao del Norte and Misamis Occidental is related.

Take note AMTC recently sent SSF16 here in Davao to compete with Mae Wess in the Samal route. If Tabigue becomes active again you will have another platform for ship spotting and it will shake up things in Panguil.
