PSE6-turn off auto loader

view profile

carter3john  Pro User  says:

I looked in this forum under everything I can think of, and it is refered to, but never really explained. How do you turn off, disable, stop from launching, or eliminate the autostart when you begin to down load a file (photo file) when PSE6 is installed?

Are you referring to when you downlaod an image from the internet?

I apologize for not fully understanding what you mean by downloading. Just let us know where you are downloading from, or if you mean uploading from your camera.

..I saw this earlier and have been hoping for an answer ..I use ACDSee as my media organizer and PSE for editing ..even though I don't have "auto launch Adobe Photo Downloader" selected in PSE Preferences and it isn't in my startup, whenever I plug the camera into the computer both ACDSee and Adobe photo-downloaders automatically start up

There's a setting on your OS that tells it which program to use to open which files. Somehow I turned mine off so that the default is "none of these".

I think it is in Start> Settings > Control Panel > Folder Options > File Types. For each file extension, you can set a default program to use to open that kind of file.

But I can't see how to set a "nothing" option there.

..Hi, ColleenM ..all my imaging file-types (including the jpg from the camera) are associated to open in ACDSee ..and they do ..no file-types are associated to open with PSE ..and only the ACDSee photo-downloader is in my start-menu ..I'm probably being a bit simple-minded, but I would think that if PSE provides a check-box in Preferences to select "auto launch Adobe Photo Downloader upon device connection", if you don't tick that box, the darn thing shouldn't auto-launch upon device connection ..I've been living with it for 18 months and it doesn't really bother much, but this topic just got me thinking about it ..maybe there's something in control-panel >> hardware >> devices

Here, see if this will help:
download.cnet.com/Autoplay-Repair/3000-2094_4-10515436.html

It will allow you set your handlers any way you want. I don't have a PC for editing stuff, but it seems it will work. Hope so anyways.

I was refering to downloading from my digital camera Kingston SD card, and suppose any card. At first my computer would (with the Corel packaged photo software) would pop up with Corel if I even typed Jpeg. Now that I have installed PSE6 which I very much like, it pops up for even a jpeg from an email. I personally use Picasa3 for my organizer and I am use to it, I just want Adobe out of my organizing life (but I love PSE6). I'll try these suggestions, so thank you very much.

..gwennie2006: ..thanks ..that little program worked a charm ! ..took just a minute to download and install the program and then about 10 seconds to find the culprit and remove it

ericdege, why don't you tell us who the culprit is/was? I would like to try it but looking at it I wouldn't have used it. Thanks, gwennie2006, I hope I get a chance to try it.

..Hi, carter3john: ..sorry, I should have done that
..the main screen of the program has numerous tabs, including one for "images" ..just click that tab and look for the PSE icon ..I only had one, titled "acquire and organize" ..right-mouse-click that and you get a pop-up menu with several options, including "remove from images" and "erase completely" ..it probably would have been prudent to pick "remove", but I chose "erase completely" then closed the program ..I took a few junk-shots, plugged in the camera and the Adobe downloader no longer started up, only my ACDSee downloader ..of course, I checked to make sure everything else in PSE was working okay and there are no problems at all ..life is good

ColleenM, I did your suggestion. I'll try uploading some file tomorrow. I'm too tired tonight. I have a default organizer that I would rather use so you may have the solution for me. I'll use that program suggested by gweenie2006 if it dosen't work. Thanks, I really can't believe that Adobe makes life so hard. I went though this with previous versions of PSE, but I can't remember how I fixed it.

In PSE6 the Adobe Photo Downloader can be disabled from auto launch in the Preferences of the Organizer. Go to Edit /preferences/camera or card Reader/download options and deselect the box for "Auto Launch Adobe Photo Downloader on device connect." It can also be disabled by right clicking on the system tray Icon and click disable. there is NO WAY to stop the Adobe Downloader from starting up when the PC is started, it just runs in the background all the time, thus the icon in the system tray will always be there.

Thanks Dan, seems there are many ways to do it. I spent two days looking so I posted. But maybe someone else will get some use of this.

..thanks, I appreciate it DanRhett, but: ..I have deselected the box for auto-launch the downloader in preferences ..and it's not in my system tray (or in my start menu) and never has been
..and carter3john: I rebooted my computer today and the Adobe Downloader is back even though it was removed from the auto-start programs with the program gwennie2006 suggested , the auto-launch box is still unchecked and it still isn't in my system tray
..oh well, like I wrote earlier, I've lived with it for 18 months and it's really not worth bothering about any more

I can help with Windows users.
Click Start > Run and type msconfig in the Open box.
Click OK.

Now click the Startup tab and scroll down to find any instances of apdproxy in the list. Deselect them (uncheck).
Click Apply, then Close.
You will be asked to restart the computer (or not).
I suggest you restart anyway to remove the downloader from starting, which is what you want ;-)

When the computer boots, you will see a System Configuration Utility dialogue box.
Check the box and click OK. Otherwise you will see this every time you start the computer !

The downloader should now be gone and not start whenever you insert a memory card or camera.

..Hi, ""member" ..thanks for the suggestion ..unfortunately there are no instances of apdproxy in the "startup tab" (Win XP SP-3)

..edit ..okay ..I think I may have it
..when editing preferences, rather than just making sure the "auto-launch Adobe downloader" box is unchecked, you have to first check that box, which gives you the opportunity to edit the profiles listed individually to not launch automatically

..thanks for the help everyone !

Looks like you missed a step. You need to run msconfig first

Click the Start button.
Select the Run command
Type msconfig in the text box that appears in the pop-up window.

A new window appears with some tabs
One is called Startup
That tab contains a list of Startup Items.

..Hi, ColleenM ..I did follow the steps for msconfig, just seemed redundant and unnecessary to re-type all that here ..sorry if I confused
..I also went to Start Up >> All Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> System Information >> Software Environment
..there were no instances of apdproxy in Running Tasks, Loaded Modules, or Startup Programs
..I also deleted the "organizer" directory of PSE from my "Documents and settings" >> username >> application data >> adobe >> etc, etc, directory ..but, of course it was recreated the next time I started PSE

..and btw: ..the possible solution in my previous post, resetting each device profile in PSE organizer preferences, "auto load Adobe downloader" to not load didn't work ..it's still there when I connect my camera ..and I'm done messin' with it ..I'd rather be taking and editing pictures

I did this, picking the "remove from images" and it has worked so far. I have restarted my computer 3 times. I hope it holds. If not I'll try 'no longer active's' work around. Thanks everybody.

Mmm, no apdproxy :/

Eric...I appreciate you probably can't be bothered with taking this further, but it'd bug me if I couldn't get the damn thing to behave as I want it to ;-)

So...just in case, try disabling some or all of the files associated with the downloader.

Navigate to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements [your version number]
No need to delete anything...just in case......but look for the files named apdboot.dll & apdproxy.exe & PhotoDownloader.exe

Edit the file names by prefixing the word STOP with each of them.
That should hopefully bugger it up enough !
Restart the computer and cross fingers ;-)

I have several versions of downloader, from Elements 6 & 5 and with Lightroom.
So I'm not 100% sure this will work as I enabled the downloader for PSE6 to make sure I could disable it again with Sys Config.
But when it was enabled, I edited those file names in the PSE 6 folder, but the downloader icon still appeared !
I suspect it was because I had enabled the apdproxy again, but only edited the file names for PSE6 and not the others, as when I launched it, I was given a choice of which program to use (except PSE6).
So if you only have one version of Elements installed, give it a try ;-)

..ok then ..here's what I did

..#1: renamed only the executable apd file, "apdproxy.exe" ..rebooted, opened then closed PSE ..connected camera and the downloader still opened
..#2: renamed the apd .exe and the 3 apd dlls ...rebooted, etc. ..and that seems to have worked (although, the several other methods I've tried "seemed" to work as well, so I'm a bit skeptical) ..but, we'll see ..thanks for spending your time on this
