PSEFrank is a group administrator PSEFrank says:

This thread will be the home for links to Actions that we can download and install in Photoshop Elements. Group members are invited to add their own actions. As well as links to those they recommend.

Details on how to install and access Actions in Elements

Remember that not all actions will work in Photoshop Elements. So when posting a direct link to an Action download. Please state..........

1. Is the Action Elements friendly.
2. A short description of what the Action does.

If you're not sure if an action will work in Elements or not. Please state this. We may be able to take it to bits and make it work in Elements.

If you have any questions. Or want to say something about actions. Please either start a new thread. Or post to THIS THREAD Thankyou.

[Edit] Sorry, these Actions are no longer available [/edit]

Thanks, PSEFrank - I changed my username midstream...!

Anyway, I should point out that most of the autoinstallers aren't free, and I don't want to spam.

BUT: There are freebies, too. I've posted a bunch in ny blog (which also includes styles, brushes, gradients, shapes, etc. - it's sort of my dumping ground for stuff)

Rants & Raves blog

and there's a little self-installing set that runs right from the web I posted in my obligatory blog:

www.graficalicus.com/wp/?p=96

or if you prefer to download it with instructions, try here
www.graficalicus.com/graffishop/index.php?main_page=produ...

For Elements users 1-4, the hardest bit about installing actions is cleaning the cache so that PSE recognizes them on restart - I've made an auto cache cleaner that does this for you - it's here:
www.graficalicus.com/wp/?p=92

or here

(sorry for all the links - )

@ artoris...... This is very strange. I know that the link works because I just downloaded the zip file myself. And installed the .atn & .psd files in E4.

Having said that, I doubt that it is a fault at your end . I'm sure that it is a problem with Quicksharing.com. It has been hit and miss for a few days now. :-(

I could email the 2 files to you. Thats your choice. At the moment I'm stuck for an answer. I will try and find another file sharing host. But until then I can only use Email.

The files are very small, 12kb for the both of them. Private mail me if you want me to sent the files. You'll find my Email address in my profile. Or FlickrMail me.

Just curious - do you have to shoot your original image in RAW in order to use/create HDR? I am just "learning" about it -- but really only know that the pictures are just gorgeous. Need to look into it more....

Anyway, it would be cool to have a PSE action to get the effect!

6 is completely different. Now there's an .xml file to edit, and sometimes the database will update, sometimes it won't... it tends to get very frustrating!

the path for actions in 6 is here (it's a hidden directory, so unhide files and folders first via Start>Folder options, then the View tab):

SrcDir:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\6.0\Photo Creations\photo effects

and you'll see thumbnails are now .png files, and there aren't separate folders for individual action groups (that's where the .xml file comes into play).

I do have a some actions for 6 ready, with the remainder coming this week (bunch of updates). Notes in my blog.

No I'm not Frank, but did you delete the "Effects Cache" folder (which is in the "Cache" folder) when you put the new Actions into the "My Actions" folder? First time I put a couple of Actions in, followed the instructions and it worked fine. Then I later tried some adding more Actions - I couldn't work out why they wouldn't work until I remembered to re-delete that Effects Cache.

Not Frank either, but are you sure you followed the procedure in the Pre installation instructions steps 1 through 5, then skipped to : To install in Elements 5 on this page : www.flickr.com/groups/pse/discuss/72157594523638245/ ?

Then restarted PSE5 ?

Btw, you don't need to delete the Effects Cache when installing in PSE 5.
It rebuilds the effects each time PSE5 is started :-)

Just to add to what Steve has said above............

"Btw, you don't need to delete the Effects Cache when installing in PSE 5.

"

Although the above is true. Sometimes the Effects Cache does not rebuild it's self automatically. Although this seems to be rare.

If you think that this may have happened. Then do this............

When you click to open Elements 5, straight away press the Shift key ( This needs to be done while the white splash screen is still in view ).
This will force Elements 5 to rebuild the artwork & effects cache. You will see a small window appear, and it will say.........

Building artwork and effects.

This could be your problem......:-)

P.S...You will not harm anything by doing this anyway...:-)

@ johnpnj..... HDR - no I don't have an Action for PSE for it, but then it's something that should be done to a minimum of three exposures at a time - many people recommend 7 exposures. That would be one hell of an action, though I believe it's something that PS CS2 & 3 can do, with a plug-in.

To do it, I fully recommend that you get a trial version of DynamicPhoto HDR. Their website has full tutorial, advice and other help, and the trial version (which has a very informative and useful pdf full of the same advice) is so good you may be tempted to upgrade to the full package, at a very reasonable $40 mark. (The trial version lags a little behind the full deal in a few small things and puts a very small mark in the corner of the produced result).

I'll stress that I have NO connection at all with the company. I just find it a very smooth working, user-friendly tool.

I remember reading about an action(?) that would remove or reduce repeated geometric patterns in a photo without reducing sharpness, those little dots that happen often when you scan a postcard or magazine article, they're part of the printing process I think or maybe result from scanning glossy magazine paper.....I saw the discussion thread here but can't find it now. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks.

Geoff Chalcraft is a group administrator Geoff Chalcraft says:

The effect you're referring to is known as Moire (accent over the 'e' but I can't find it).
Ideally, your scanning software should have some form of Moire reduction - but it's really just blurring it out as much as it can without ruining the image.

Remedies (if you can call it that) in PS and PSE can be tried with Filtering. First, try Filter > Noise > Despeckle. That should get rid of some. It is a simple filter that looks at the overall image and smears the pixels around to smooth out the image. This filter is not always the best option. You have no control over the filter's application to your image, but it's fast and worth a try. In many cases, it does the trick. If you don't like it, just Undo it.

Also try the Gaussian Blur filter (Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur). It has settings for just how much to blur the image's pixels. The goal here is to get rid of the pattern and keep the image. Just see if you can give the image some blur to overcome the Moire but not enough to blur the lot. If you really can't get rid of it, another scan may be worth a try and, believe it or not, a slight shift of the original print in the scanner can work quite well.

Ah it's ok now, thanks Baerbel - I downloaded without the DL Manager and it worked ok...........
But..........
PSE6 Actions require a PNG file and not a PSD file - and converting the psd to png flattens the layers so the thumbnails cannot work.
I've got the Actions installed ok, in blank boxes, but I need to read the tooltip to see what they are. Not a major problem but Actions for PSE6 really need a png file if you want smart little thumbnails to identify them.
I could probably save each layer of the psd file as a separate png file, but maybe you want to think about a PSE6 version of the Actions.

[edit] Just saved each layer as a png - works fine [/edit]

I don't know a BW and desaturation, or Nielson tones - is it an Action?
If it's what I'm thinking of - a B&W layer done with a Gradient Mask, then a duplicate background set to 'Color" at about half opacity - it would be easy enough to make, but Actions can only be made in full PS/CS. They also have to have features that PSE has. If it contains something PSE hasn't got (and that's usually to do with Paths or Channels) it won't work. (Yes, you can have Channels/Curves and all sorts of plug-ins with PSE but they're not used in the same way as in PS/CS)

OK, Tom Niemann's actions....... there's not a mention of Elements on his site and you can't run them, so I'm assuming that they're not PSE compatible.

However....a useful plug-in I'd recommend for B&W and toning (in one filter).....
Virtual Photographer (a plug-in from OptikVerve Labs is a very useful little tool - it has all kind of settings to get the B&W to give the appearance of different film speeds, with settings for lots of tones. I think this would suit you admirably. I hear, however, that PSE6 with Vista doesn't seem to like it, even though OptikVerve tell me they've updated the plug-in for both. There's an ongoing discussion about it here.

Download the file (just called 'setup') and dbl click to run it. You will get an option in there for where to install it - you can either browse to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 5.0\Plug-Ins or leave it on the default option, the Desktop.

If you go for Desktop, a folder will be put there, called Virtual Photographer. Open that and Inside it are the 'plug-in' file itself ("virtualPhotographer.8bf"), a folder called "Extra settings" and a readme file. Leave that folder open for now.

Go to Start > My Computer > Local Disk C > Program Files > Adobe > Photoshop Elements *.0 > Plug-ins Folder. (Not sure which PSE version you have). If you have Vista it's very similar but I believe "Program Files" are called "Program Data".

Drag the 8bf file and the folder from the Desktop to this folder. Restart PSE (use the shift button while restarting - Shift + Edit, and keep the Shift down until loading is complete). You should have the new filter called OptikVerve. Click on that (having loaded a picture) and you will see VirtualPhotographer revealed.

I would suggest you read the readme file but it actually tells you to put your plug-in into the "Filters" sub-folder inside the Plug-Ins folder, which is not necessary.

This member is no longer active on Flickr says:

Sarah........."The command "make" is currently not available.." is pretty much because there is something in the action that PSE does not have available.
It may, for example, need to call up the Channels palette. Which PSE doesn't have. Even if you have a plug-in version, it won't work, as it won't be the same as the real thing.
Many other things that PSE doesn't have could cause the same error.

Bear in mind that most actions are written for Photoshop.
Many will work in PSE, but unless it specifically says that it will work in PSE, chances are it won't.
After all, if it was aimed at PSE, it would already be accompanied by a .psd or .png thumbnail.

Having said that, if the actions you downloaded were catering for PSE, then it won't be a missing function. It could be the way you have your layers set up.
If this is the case, then please link to an action that you are having trouble with and I'll be happy to take a look through it :)

I wrote my newest Element 6 friendly action set, CoffeeShop CoffeeBar:

CoffeeShop CoffeeBar Free PS/PSE Actions!

Then I had the great idea to make it convenient for PS Element users and actually combine all of my Element actions together in one download. So I now have the CoffeeShop PSE action set, which includes my newest CoffeeBar action set, plus Vivid and Barista. These will also all work in Photoshop, and I actually improved Creamy Toffee Latte as it is now more adjustable. So the set includes the above actions, plus these:

Newest CoffeeShop Free Action: CoffeeShop Vivid
CoffeeShop Barista Action for PSE and PS

coffeeteaphotography.blogspot.com/2008/08/download-my-hug...

I am not sure if any of these actions work in PSE4 or PSE5, but would love to hear input on that.

HI - I've read the posts on this thread and seem to be stuck. I'm using Windows XP and PSE 5.0 and have downloaded the 4 actions posted by PSE Frank (thank you so much). I have followed the directions posted:
i.e. 1. save in Photo creations; special effects; photo effects;
2. created a new folder called "my actions";
3. unzipped files
4. saved psd files as png files

Here is where the problem lies -
when I open PSE 5.0, and select photo effects drop down in special effects, I see my actions on the second drop down. However, nothing appears in the palette below.

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm dying to try some of these wonderful actions!

TIA!

PSE5 requires PSD files for the thumbnails (I think) The png requirement came with PSE6.

But regardless of whether you have the thumbnails (psd or png)......
You should see the names of your Actions if you click on the small double arrow to the right of the effects icons, at the top, and select "Show Names".

Never having used PSE5, I'm not sure about the "my actions" folder, but you could just drop your atn files and their accompanying psd files into the "photo effects" folder. Then restart PSE with the shift button down until the program is fully open.

Your 4-step process might be better if you......
1. unzip the zip folder onto your desktop
2. use Explorer to navigate your way to the "photo effects" folder and drag the files into there.
(So disregard making a "my actions" folder (for now) and disregard changing psd's to png's.

Thanks so much, Geoff!

I had figured out my error. I had all of the atn; psd and png files for each action in their own subfolders in the my actions folder, so they didn't show when I opened the special effects palette.

Ah, yes - having sub-folders for each action would be a good way to keep things tidy and there's actually a way to make it work if you use an xml file for each - though I've never bothered to find out how it works.

I have a new free action, CoffeeShop Vignette, available for download at www.coffeeteaphotography.blogspot.com/ .

CoffeeShop Vignette Free Action!

It works in PSE6, but for some reason it does not seem to run in PSE5 because of some issue with Ctrl-J the background layer in one of the first steps. If I can resolve this issue I will let you guys know the new link!

Did anyone else notice that PSEFranks website has expired? I was hoping to get the B&W action?

Lance If you go to Rita's blog (link in the post above yours) you'll find the Barista Actions. It includes a plain B&W action which is as good as PSEFrank's, and other Actions too.

Follow the instructions carefully.

Thanks Geoff. I picked it up, but now that I upgraded to PSE7, I'm having trouble with them. I'll watch the other discussion thread on PSE7 and hopefully once someone gets a whole packet together with the xml etc. that will work. I did find how to install the action in the guided edit, but not in the full edit way. After installing the action files and restarting holding down shift, the effects do not appear in the effects window on full edit for me.

Frank help please. Popup blitz when trying to download your actions.

I am an avid fan of your PSE Frank's posts but when trying to download the actions from your link in this thread, I get casino, click2find, yieldmanager and offer pages popping up after being directed to Franks home page.

Am I alone?

There could be a problem now. PSEFrank left this group about six months ago and now only occasionally pops up on the Photoshop Support Group.. I expect you could FlickrMail him, but he's moved on a bit now and may not have the information at his fingertips like he used to.

If it's a problem with the Action, you'll find most actions are now covered by Rita's Coffee Shop Actions.but if it's a particular action, tell us what it is and we have an alternate source for it. - and I could even edit the link that you used that had all the popups on it. and replace it with something more useful.

Geoff, the problem is that the website expired and now anyone following that link is getting hit with advertisements. Maybe someone could remove the links above....

Yes, it's excellent but its price is right out of balance with PS Elements, if you see what I mean.
On one side we have PSE for around $100, which has perhaps 80% of what PS can do, and then another editor which can do a lot (but doesn't use layers, blends, filters and other tools) for $300. It's good for a professional for fast workflow, proofing tasks and general business needs, with lots of batch operations and it's good for somebody who can spend that kind of money easily. But I'd rather put $300 towards another lens or the next camera.

Other people may want to disagree - but this isn't the Discussion - or even the right group - for it.

I can see that this is a perfectly valid question for PSE users - I expect some members here also have Lightroom - so perhaps you should "Post a New Topic" in this Group.

There is a big Lightroom Group for it but, like I say, it's a valid question for PSE users. Just not in a discussion about Actions.

So I'll close this thread again, having closed down the redundant links to Actions - there are plenty of other Actions on the web for PSE users - at Hidden Elements, Graficalus and the Free Coffee Shop Actions for PS and PSE Group.
