1) What is Project Weather?
Project Weather is a Yahoo! Initiative to collect photos that reflect the beauty and magnificence of different weather conditions in locations around the world. Yahoo! will use photos from the Project Weather Flickr group in the Yahoo! Weather mobile app.
2) What is the Yahoo! Weather mobile app?
The Yahoo! Weather mobile app is a new mobile app for Android that brings every season to life with dazzling Flickr images of your current and favorite locations. You’ll also get an instant five-day forecast and quick access to detailed weather for the day. For more information, visit Yahoo! Mobile or Yahoo! Weather in the Android Market .
3) How will my photo be used?
If accepted into the Project Weather Flickr group pool, your photo will display in the Yahoo! Weather mobile app as a photo behind the current weather forecast for that location, as shown in the screenshot below.
For example, if you submit a photo tagged clear, San Francisco, day, and your photo is accepted to the pool, your photo may display on clear, San Francisco days as the background image for the current San Francisco weather forecast.

4) What types of photos are you looking for?
We are looking for awesome photos from any country, any city, anywhere in the world, that follow these guidelines:
1) Do not have people as the focal point The image may include people so long as they are not recognizable. In other words, any person in the image must not be the focal point but may be a part of the background.
2) The photo must reflect one of the following weather conditions, in day or night:
Clear, Cloudy, Rain, Storm, Fog, Snow
3) Minimum resolution as follows:
Horizontal (landscape orientation): Minimum of 1024 px width x 680 px height
Square: Minimum of 1024 px width x 1024 px height
Vertical (portrait orientation): Minimum of 1024 px width x 1024 (or greater) px height
4) No borders
5) No signatures, watermarks, logos, nor overlaid text. Attribution will be provided automatically by the Yahoo! Weather app.
6) Allow "Anyone" to view the original file size:
In order for Project Weather to view your largest/original file size, you must allow "Anyone" to view your original image files. To do this, go to www.flickr.com/account/prefs/downloads/?from=privacy and set your Privacy & Permissions to "Anyone (Recommended)."
7) No panoramic photos
5) How do I submit photos for consideration?
1. Log into your Flickr account
2. Verify that your photo meets all of the guidelines in #4 "What types of photos are you looking for?" above
3. Join the Project Weather Group at www.flickr.com/groups/projectweather by clicking “Join this group”
4. Submit your photos to the group according to the the guidelines and tagging instructions on the page under “About Project Weather”
5. Tag each photo as follows:
a) GEOTAG the photo with a particular CITY, STATE or COUNTRY. Landmarks are not supported. Be as specific as possible (i.e. City is preferred if available). More info on geotagging is available here: www.flickr.com/help/map/?search=geotag#201
b) Tag the photo with ONE of the following appropriate weather conditions:
clear
cloudy
rain
snow
storm
fog
c) Tag the photo for time of day using either:
day
night
6. Add the photo(s) to the group
6) Do I need a Flickr account to participate?
Yes, you must submit photos to Project Weather via a Flickr account. If you are not yet a Flickr member, sign up here. On this page, you can sign in via your Facebook or Yahoo! accounts, or create a separate Flickr account.
7) Who reviews the photos?
A team of trained Yahoo! Weather photo editors evaluates submissions to Project Weather.
8) How long does it take to find out whether a photo has been accepted into the pool?
The Yahoo! Weather team will be reviewing photos on an ongoing basis, and aim to notify users whose photos have been accepted within 30 days of the original submission.
9) How do you decide whether to accept a photo?
We’re looking for photos that will:
• Get people excited about weather (yes, we know that’s not very specific, but we are looking for rich, captivating images from across the globe, from a vibrant, clear day to a dark, stormy day)
• Be well suited for a smartphone screen (since the Yahoo! Weather app screen is vertical – not all photos work well in this format)
10)How will I know whether my photo is accepted into Project Weather?
One month after you submit a photo, you can check to see whether your photo is in the group by viewing the photo and looking at the “This photo also appears in” section in the right hand column of the page. If “Project Weather” is listed in this section, your photo has been accepted into the group.
11) What do I get for participating? Will Yahoo! pay me for using my photos?
Having your photo featured in the app will bring a whole new audience to your photostream. However, you will not receive financial compensation for use of your photos.
12) Do I get photo credit in the app?
Yes, your Flickr screen name and a link to the photo will be shown on the screen of the app, as shown in the screenshot below.

13) Does Yahoo! own my photo?
No. You retain any and all rights over your photo. By accepting our terms and conditions, you are granting Yahoo! a non-exclusive license to use your photos in connection with the Project Weather and Yahoo! Services (as that term is defined in the group rules). Should you decide you want to remove a photo from Project Weather, you may do so by simply removing it from the pool, and it will no longer be used in Project Weather nor in any other Yahoo! Services.
14) How many photos can I submit?
There is no limit to the number of photos you can submit to Project Weather.
15) How do I remove my photo from the pool?
If you ever want to remove an individual photo from the pool after it has been accepted, you may do so by simply removing it from the group. You may also quit the group if you want all of your photos removed from the pool.
16) How do I get the Yahoo! Weather mobile app for Android?
You can enter your phone number here to receive a link to download the app directly to your phone or download the app at the Android Market . The app is currently only available for Android phones.
17) How can I see my photo in the app once it has been accepted into the Project Weather group?
While we can’t control the weather, you can download the app and regularly check the weather for the location that your photo represents. When the weather condition and time of day match your photo, your photo may show for that location.
18) How often will my photo display in the app?
The frequency at which your photo displays in the app depends on the number of photos in the group that reflect the same weather condition, location, and time of day as your photo.
Photos are rotated continuously in the app, meaning that if there are three photos in the Project Weather group representing the same city, weather condition, and time of day, each photo will show 1/3 of the times that a user views the app for that weather condition, time of day, and city.
19) I still have questions
If you have a question that was not addressed in this FAQ, please post it in the “Discussion” area of the Project Weather Flickr Group, and we will get back to you.
