About Yahoo! for Good & Product Ops Community Day 18th July

On 18th July 2007 a large group of volunteers from Yahoo!’s London headquarters converged on the Waterloo Action Centre, and Living Space in Waterloo Road, to work with local community groups. The 40 volunteers split into two teams, one focused on the renovation of the dance hall in the Waterloo Action Centre, whilst another group in Living Space worked with 6 local community groups to provide guidance and assistance on upgrading their websites.

The work at the Waterloo Action Centre kicked off early in the day and involved redocorating the middle dance hall, as well as creating an improved café area with a free wireless internet network. The South Bank Centre had donated two of the photos taken of local residents by photographer Rankin which will be hung in the main hall. A BBQ lunch in the garden gave a chance for the volunteers to meet with local residents and community groups over burgers and salad.

Liz Conroy, Centre Manager was delighted with how things had gone “it was a mindblowing day – the amount of work that happened in one day was incredible, and the change to centre is great!”

Down at Living Space, 10 web developers and designers worked with groups including AWG, SE1 United and the Waterloo Councelling Service to upgrade their websites using some of the latest tools available for developers by Yahoo! Michael Wolfers, a local resident who was involved in the day for AWG, was able to redesign and relaunch his website following the days work. He said “we even managed to get the new site live before we went to the pub in the evening!”
